basic training and graduated as a first lieutenant to start an illustrious Army career. Fighting on front lines in France, he was advanced to major and given command of a base hospital, the first Negro given that responsibility. HE ESTABLISHED ANOTHER first when, returning to this country and being discharged as a colonel, he was given command of the Veterans’ hospital at Tuskegee, Ala. Returning to Indianapolis after
about ten years there, he established a wide practice and set the pace for a high standard among Negro physicians of the community. He was outstandingly active in YMCA work, being for many years a guiding figure behind the Senate Avenue YMCA and also the first Negro named to the board of management of the Indianapolis YMCA. ka, where the Tigers suffered their second defeat of the current season. After trailing through the first half. Attucks rallied to lead 43 , -42 at the end of the third quarter. But the Tigers faltered in the last period for a 55-53 defeat. Searcy and Hazelwood saw action in the game. Searcy scored 8 points, his lowest total of arty game this season. Hazelwood did not score. By dropping two of their first four tilts, the Tigers are off to their poorest start since 1952. Some fans have already "given up” on this year’s tea’m, while others are following a “wait and see” oolicy. - THOUGH HE IS kind and friendly toward his players, this is not the first time Coach Crowe has liseiplined an erring athlete. He once benched the great Willie Gardner for two games because of slighting his studies. "I’m trying to impress on the boys that there is something here at Attucks more important than basketball,” Crowe said on that occasion. In 1953 Bailey Robertson, now the state college scoring champ at Indiana Central, and Winford O’Neal were left behind when the bus pulled out for Dunkirk. “They were both absent from school yesterday due to illness, and I am afraid they are not well enough to play today,” Crowe explained.
