an estimated half hour after the accident. MR. JOHNSON was jjtruck as he was crossing the street. His body was carried 119 feet on the car’s hood before falling into the street near a dirt pathway. Deputy Coroner, James Anderson, said the victim died of internal injuries and compound fractures of both legs, left arm and skull. Police called to the scene, found no eye witnesses, no tire skid marks, no broken auto glass — practically no clues. Calling upon his rich experience in handling hit-run cases, Capt. brought to the police laboratory, from the funeral director’s morgue where it has been sent. From time of the police arrival shortly after 6:30 p.m. police under the traffic inspector worked throughout the night until early morning. All motorcycle men and traffic prevention squads joined in an intensive combing of the neighborhood for the killer-car. PATROLMAN BABBITT, off duty Tuesday, asked for and received permission to work on the case. Capt. Jacobs, as result of laboratory investigation, had found tiny particles of red paint in the pockets of Johnson’s clothes.
Officer Babbitt, armed with this meager possible lead searched the area which he knew and located the car in the rear of McCormick’s home. As a reward he was given a week’s vacation with pay. Arrested at the Fairmount Glass Works where he was employed as a laborer, McCormick admitted ne was the hit-run driver sought. In a signed statement he said
