Safety Hints Valuable To Amateur Swimmers CHICAGO (ANP)—There is something about the water which seems to encourage the foolhardy to become even more foolhardy. Actually, knowledge of a few s.mple and basic rules based on everyday common sense will serve to increase your enjoyment of swimming whether you are in a pool, a lake or the surf, and at the same time minimize

risk even for the beginner.

Here are suggestions for swimm'ng safety, particularly important at this time of year when virtually all of us turn

to the water for vacation purposes.

(1) Never dive into a strange body of water, whether it be a lake, pool or ocean. Walk in and check the bottom and depth first. (2) Be careful diving into the J.rf. P'.Lnging head first into breakers can be very dangerous, because a rolling surf frequently conceals all sons of foreign ob-

jects.

^3) Walk, don’t run, into cold water. Cold water shocks the nervous system and can bring on cramps. This rule does not apply as strongly at a pool as in the surf, where undertow is an added hazard. Rubbing cold water on the wrists, ankles, back of the neck and s omach helps a great deal before going into cold water. (4) Wait an hour-and-a-half af-

ARRIVING AT NfW YORK’S CITY HALL, Coun- IT’S LIGHT-UP TIME as Mr. Brown pores over the oilman Earl Brown prepares to tackle the prob- day’s agenda. “Naturally I like a Lucky when I m lems of the world’s largest city. He’s an editor and relaxing,” he says, “but I enjoy one just as much newspaper columnist as well as a civic leader, when I’m working and can’t take a break.”

New York City Councilman sticks to Luckies... because LUCKIES TASTE BETTER

“IT’S TOASTED” to taste better!

„ “I’ve been a Lucky smoker some £5 years,” says Earl Brown. “In that time, I’ve had occasion to sample other brands—but ■ to my way of thinking, Luckies taste better than any of them.” Luckies do taste better—because they’re made of fine tobacco that’s TOASTED to taste better. Good idea for you: Light up a Lucky ! yourself. You’ll say it’s the best-tasting cigarette you ever smoked! LUCKIES TASTE BETTER Cleaner, Fresher, Smoother! C)A.T.Co. ter a large meal and an hour after a light meal before going into the water. (5) If you get a leg cramp, grab the big toe of the foot which has the cramp and bend it towards the bottom of your foot, then keep wiggling it back and forth. This will break the cramp in short order. There s really nothing you can do for a stomach cramp, which is why it’s so important to observe the proper time period before going into the water after a meal. (6) Even if you are an exceptionally strong swimmer, stay within your depth. In a lake, if you feel like a long swim, go with a better swimmer accompanying you or have someone in a boat alongside you. (7) Never go more than a third of your capacity when swimming away from shore, whether it be a lake or ocean. The swim out is only half the trip—the easy half. Tiredness comes on suddenly. (8) If by chance you do get into trouble, above all, keep calm. Relax and do everything you can to regain your strength. The best thing is to roll over on your back, float, fold your arms so that your bhead rests on the palms of your hands and breathe slowly and quietly. Point your head towards shore and gently paddle your feet, not necessarily to head you forcetully towards shore but at least to keep you from gonig further out. Your strength will be restored in a few moments and you’ll be able to swim back safely.
