Wounded Man Found At Home By His Brother Shirley Gowdy, 47, found mysteriously shdt at his home, 542 W. 29th, early Wednesday evening, was reported in serious condition at General hospital Thursday. Detectives who questioned the wounded man as he was being rushed to General hospital said he informed them only that he was shot in the back yard of his home by someone he could not see or recognize after he had parked his car in the garage. Owen G. Gowdy, a brother living next door, at 544, said after hearing two shots, he rushed into the yard, and found the back door locked. Breaking a pane of glass in the door panel, he entered and found his brother lying on the kitchen floor.

Convict Mon Of White Slavery Chester Mack Smith, alleged 38-year-old director of one of the Mid-West’s biggest shopliftingprostitution rings, was sentenced to four years in prison Tuesday afternoon following r-is conviction on white slave charges in Federal Court. Smith, who reportedly directed a battalion of women into prostitution traffic here and on shoplifting forays in adjoining states, was convicted of taking a 16-year-old girl to Kentucky last February for immoral purposes. Delores DeJarnette, who was arrested here last March under the name of “Dorothy Ruth Williams” when police cracked Smith’s ring and arrested six, testified for the prosecution at Smith’s trial. The 16-year-old girl, who authorities. said could pass for 21, told the court Smith took her and several other women to Louisville and Hopkinsville, Ky., the. last part of February. She said she and Smith “stayed together” during (the week the group operated around the Army camps and in the city department stores SELINA KENNEDY, at 26 regarded by authorities as “one of the best boosters anywhere,” took the stand and corroborated the

girl’s story. She said she warned Smith before the trip that he “had better not take that 16-year-old girl out of town.” Smith, who lives with what he calls “my wives and children,” admitted from the witness stand that he had taken the girl to Kentucky. Charged with offering U.S. Attorney Edgar D. Whitcomb a $5,000 bribe to “take care of the case,” Smith reportedly said outside the courtroom that he was ‘being railroaded.” SMITH HAS BEEN ARRESTED 24 times by Indianapolis officers (‘uring a long crime career which started in 1923 in Hopkinsville, Ky., when he was given six months cn a grand Iraceny charge. He has been charged here with narcotics law violations, contributing to delinquency, violation of t ie beverage act, gaming, grand larceny and receiving stolen goods, besides the white slave charges.

Killed As Tuck Falls Upon Him Ray Chastine, 41. 1244 N. Illinois, garage mechanic at the Continental Baking Company, was killed when a truck upon which he was working slid from a lift and fell upon him, crushing his skull Wednesday afternoon. Two fellow employes, Leonard Towels, 39, 911 Elms, and Earl Duncan* 34, 5063 Emerson Court. ! said they were working on the | second floor when they heard a ! crash and when they reached the j first floor they found Chastine I pinioned under the front fender of the company truck. They attempted to lower the lift, but were unable to free the accident victim. Funeral services will be held at the Stuart Mortuary Saturday, at 1 p.m. with burial in Floral Park. A native of Fairfield, Ky., he lived here 20 years and had been | employed at the Continental garage for the past 10 years. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. i Mary Chastine; father, Reno Chastine, Muncie, and a sister, Mrs.; Nell Dunlap, Indianapolis.
