Duke Ellington. Paul Whiteman. Arthur Godfrey and many more. Ten year old Leslie U. Crayne is still holding the big light as a sensational child singing star of TV fame. Also small fry singing pianist Sugar “Chile” Robinson is tons with the boogie beat. Songstress Toni Harper brought the house down at the New York Apollo Theatre, and new'comer young Billy Allen made a hit at the Apollo Theatre’s weekly iimateur show and was awarded a week’s contract recently. . . “THE APPLE” is the place for music makers, music lovers and music critics. In fact. New f York is noted for its many musical productions. NEXT FEBRUARY, MGM RECORDS will have three stars featured in a touring concert at one time: Billy Eckstine. George Shearing and Leslie U. Crayne. This will be a 3-milhon-dollar combination. . . . Billy Eckstine is a recording artist for MGM records and has not left that company as falsely reported in Variety, the trade mag. Mr “B” has three more years with MGM on his present contract. Both he and his manager, Milt Gabler, denied the Variety, report. IN CHICAGO RECENTLY Orchestra leader Duke Ellington announced that he has proposed the name of Billy Eckstine for the national presidency of a new organization which will promote the careers of show business hopefuls. . . . Lynn Hope and his great band, played for the “Grand Ball" of the Elks Convention in Atlanta. Hope was chosen from among 25 orchestras. . . . Mercer Ellington, son of i the great Duke is now 7 a national sales specialist,for the Dant Distillery.J CLEV BOTTOMS and his trio are no longer at TILLIE’S LOUNGE out Northwestern-way. A new unit started on last Monday nite. Many other popular local bands are to follow 7 . . . . Vocalist Bea Byers after Sept. 2nd will make her home on the w 7 est coast. She will be missed by all. . . . Bandleader Palmer Jenkins is going back to the Army this week. LESLIE TAYLOR JR. and his new sensational combo are packing them in with standing room only at Bill Ray’s 303 CLUB located at 21st and Blvd. P. The cats play three nights a week namely: Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays. Time: 9 PM til 1 AM. . . . Some of the best food in town is served there by the popular Lois Pennington and the lovely Jackie Robinson. THE RECORDER MUSICIANS’ “GRAND BALL” will be held at the Sunset Terrace Ballroom on Sunday nite Sept. 13th. Amos Milburn and his nationally known orchestra has been engaged to play for the affair. At which time, all the winners in a recent poll will form a “Dream Band” and perform during the evening. Lovely Trohies and certificates of merit will be awarded to them at that time. Mr. St. Clair Gibson and yours truly, are the contest directors. JOHNNY BLANCHARD and his unit are now 7 on a month’s vacation. . . . T{ie BobCats All-Stars will soon record. . . . Willis Kirk, one of Naptown’s top drummers has just returned home after doing a short tour with Lionel Hampton and his orchestra. THIS WEEK’S “STAR OF THE COLUMN” is none other than my old friend Harold Malone, one of the best 88’ers in the middlewest today. Started his musical career back in 1938, when the gigs here were really jumping. Harold, was one of the first sidemen in the BobCats orchestra which was organized about that time. Later, worked w’ith LaVon Kemp. King Kolax. Dud Storms, Jimmy Cole and many other bands over the country. Some of the top spots that have had the pleasure to hear him are: The Top Hat, Louisville, Glass Bar, St. Louis. The Keys, Famous Door, Club Udell, here and many other great clubs over the nation. His hobby is reading plus other things (smile), future desire is to return to the East and work with a name band. . . . Here is wishing you all the luck in the world, my friend. . . . Thanks a lot for your card which jumped into port last week, Earl Pash. I know you are really enjoying your vacation. I wish I could be with you. MEMPHIS SLIM, the blues singing pianist, and his blues shouting combo, the top attraction at St. Louis’ Glass Bar, are riding on the glory of his latest recording, “The Come Back”. There was a battle of saxes at the same spot recently, between Charlie Parker and Jimmv Forrest and their combos. THE MUSICAL UPBEAT CLOSES WITH THIS: CATS AND MUSIC LOVERS. STAY IN THE GROVE AND RIGHT KEY. WITHOUT A HARMONIOUS MOOD. THE SOUNDS ARE SAD, AND BROTHER. YOU CAN’T MAKE ANY “BREAD” THAT WAY . . . JUST PLAY IT COOL.
