WASHINGTON (ANP)—A group of 16 prominent Negro persons presented a seven point plan to end discrimination against minority groups in the United States armed forces to Secy, of Defense James Forrestal, last week. This group, headed by Lester B. Granger, executive secretary of the National Urban league, grew out of the national defense conference on Negro affairs called by Forrestal April 26. At that time the colored leaders refused to become advisors until the armed forces ended segregation. Since then the leaders have worked out a scheme which they believe could end the bias in the services. Their statement criticized army policy as expressed by Secy, of the Army Kenneth A. Royall. They said: “The army’s present policy to which it subbornly adheres, seems to be a grudging adjustment of the original mobilization plans dl*uwn up well in advance of World War II which contemplated the use of Negroes under the most limited conditions imaginable.” The scheme calls for the following changes:

1. Restudy of the Gillem board report on utilization of Negroes in the army by the office of the secretary of defense. The report challenges the army’s present interpretations of the Gillem report because “certain basic recommendations were either ignored or misinterpreted.” 2. The establishment of a “laboratory project” of completely integrated large military unit from the division level down to the squad with the aim of eliminating segregation eventually and efficiently. 3. “Hearty and unqualified approval” by the army of any state that wished to end segregation in its national guard units. 4. A “formal published policy” ending racial quotas in enlisting regulations in all branches of the service so that “any man, regardless of race, color or creed who meets physical, mental or moral standards is qualified for enlistment or reenlistment.” Such a policy is theoretically practiced by the navy now. 5. Elimination of the stewards’ branch by the navy as a section restricted to Negroes, Filipinos and other “colored” minorities and the ending of the differences of pay between this branch and other branches of the navy. 6. Serious consideration by the navy of commissioning more Negro officers. There are only fom in tHe navy now. <7. MARION—Mrs. Katie Watts, 94, died at 3 a. m. Sunday, Sept. 5, at her home, 1516 West Seventh st.. after an illness of several days. Funeral services were held Thursday of that week at the Apostolic Faith Assembly church. Among out-of-towners attending the services were Sam Weatherly, Durant, Miss.; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Weatherly and Booker T. FORT WAYNE — Pilgrim Baptist church celebrated the 17th anniversary of its pastor, Rev John Dixie, Aug. 15-23. Prof. David Breaux, blind Indianapolis Gospel singer and pianist rendered a program of songs a Pilgrim Baptist church Aug. 29 Prof. Breaux sang to a capacity crowd. In connection w’ith the program w'as a contest amom members of the sponsoring auxiliaries. Miss Heles Dixie turned ir the largest amount of money above ten dollars and won a wrist watch presented by the professor. Th« program was sponsored by the Red Circle and BTU. Prof. Breaux returned to Fort Wayne the follow ing Wednesday, and gave a sim ilar program at Shiloh Baptis church, of which Rev. William Caldwell is pastor. Mrs. Gaius Curry spent twe days at Fort Harrison visiting hei husband, Gaius Curry, pa tient in Billings veterans hospital Mrs. Margaret Black died las’ week in the Methodist hospital after an illness of about eight months Funeral services were conducted by Rev. LAWRENCEBURG—The LPC social club entertained children of the community with a picnic at the Tate street recreation grounds. Winning, first prizes in the contests were James Haroid Thomas, Esther Todd, Mary Greene, Phylliss Kemper, Shirley Todd, Frank Hawkins, Robert Turner, Virginia Mitchell, Fletcher Yates, and Anthony Yates. Ice cream and punch were served. * Mesdames Stoughton Summers and John Freeland spent Friday in Cincinnati. * Rev. Stoughton accompanied Mrs. Sidnella Todd and daughters to Indianapolis Friday evening to visit Mrs. Todd’s grandson, who is a patient in Riley hospital there. * Mr. and Mrs. John Freeland accompanied their son, Russell, to Greencastle Sunday. Russell, who has an outstanding scholastitv record, will enter his sophomore year at DePauw university. * Mrs. Sidnelle Todd spent Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis. * Rev. and Mrs. W. H. Z. Riddell spent Sunday evening in Lawrenceburg. * Recognition services for Rev. and Mrs. Stoughton Summers will start Sunday with services rendered by the pastor and members of Garfield Baptist church, Indianapolis.
RUSHVILLE—Funeral services for Mrs. Louise Bradford, 501 E 7th street, were held at the Wyat* Funeral Home last week. A native of Laurel, she was 94 at the time of her death. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Clara Smith; two grandchildren, Mrs. Helen Moore and Selney Bradford, Cleveland three great grandchildren, Chester 1 and Vivian Meyers and Miss Alma Moore; one great, great grandchild. Deborah Meyers; and a host of other relatives. Among out-of-town attendants at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Quincy Buckner, Carthage, and Mesdames Mable Preston. Sallie Grant, Man Hall, and Rubie Jones, Indiana polis. Rev. B. F. Holloway, pastor of Wesleyan Methodist church efficiated, assisted by Elder E. E Jones, pastor of 'Christ Temple Burial was in East Hill cemetery. * Mrs. Joe Tracy is improving at her home. * Mrs. Robert Miller, who has been ill for almost a year is now improving rapidly. * Mrs B. F. Holloway is able to be out again. * John Jones and family have returned from vacationing in Michigan. * Elder E. E. Jones will preach in Carthage Sunday.
