SHRINERS PLAN NEW POLICIES OF PROGRESS
BUFFALO (ANP) — When th46th annual imperial council of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic shrine convenes in Atlantic City, Aug. 17-21, one of its major moves will be to revamp and revitalize several departments of the group, in an effort to meet the increasing needs in the fight for human freedom throughout the country. According to Imperial Poten ate Raymond E. Jackson here last we' k. ’The full impact for need of overhauling the present departmental programs was brought into clear focus as a result of a recent tour of affiliated temp’es in the south. I became increasingly I convinced that Shriners must be i known far and wide as militant crusading spokesm n for human j freedom everywhere. We must bring into being justice and (quality for all peoples.” The tour of affiliated temples was made in 11 southern states, including Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia. Louisiana, North Carolina, Soutli Carolina and Tennes see. cal rights, and housing. A program for improved h< aith standards is already under way. Its national charities department has been carrying on a campaign to raise $50,000,000 for tuberculosis and cancer research. In the field of education, Jackson pointed out that there exists an appalling lack of proper educational facilities for Negroes in all southern states. “No race j or nation can succeed unless all | of the people are educated, and : leadership must stem from edu- ' cation,” he declared. | “We must institute a campaign to secure better educational standards and have laws governing school attendance. In addition. ! there must be a program to en- ! courage the proper training and . hiring of qualified personnel at de- ; cent salaries.” He pointed out that a program t for improved health standards would avail little if nothing is done about providing decent and ad< quate housing. • Improved living standards raise the desires of people, and more attention to this field of public welfare will decrease crime and disease. Other proposals will deal with 1 the revamping of the public relations department, which has recently completed two successful years under the leadership of Col. Howard C. Gilbert, Columbus, O. ATLANTA TEACHERS' SUIT UNCHANGED ATLANTIA (ANP)—The federal suit of Samuel L. Davis and other.. Negro teachers of the Atlanta Public School System will go on docket in federal district court at an early date as scheduled despite a technical ruling last week that the name of Miss Ira Jarrell, present superintendent of sdhoote, could i not be placed as defendant, subI Uituting that of retired superin- , tendent, Willis A. Sutton. City atternoys had argued that the defendant’s name had not been substituted within six months after Dr. Sutton's resignation and j could not be used in the present i proceedings under federal laws. The motion to substitute Miss Jarrell’s name was denied by Judge E. Marvin Underwood in an answer filed in the clerk’s office but the ruling was without prejudice to the plaintiff’s filing a new motion to comply with federal rules and substitute the nam« of Miss Jarrell. (ANP)—Not to be outdone by his bay area rivals the Gan Francisco Peals, Manager Vic Devincenzi put his baseball club, the Oakland Oaks, on record this week as -‘definirf ly interested’’ in hiring Negro players. Major and Minor Leagues Seek Negro Ball Players
CHICAGO (ANP) —The minors is well as the majors are now seeking Negro players to bolster up their league standings and their box-effice appeal. '1 he San Francisco Peals, plagued with Injuries and dropping as a lead!, g Lea^u • contender, have asked Abe Saper ,teiu, Chicagoan who owns the Har em Giobe 1 rollers, to recommend iegro players. Saperstein has named Gam Jeth oe, outfielder, .and Clyde Nelson bird Laseman of the* Cleveland luckeyes, and Sam Wheeler, an jutflelder of his Globe Trotters, as hree men he believes can make the grade. In Paperstein’s opinion,, Jelhroe is a better player than Larry Doby who was signed by the Cleveland Indians. Jethroe is batting .310 and has stolen 2!) bases this season About a month ago. he was being onsilered by the Boston Red Kox Currently, there are only three Negroes in the minors, and all of
these are the property of Brooklyn. Of the ti io, Roy Campanella, a catcher with Montreal, is rated by International Leaguers as a better prospect than Jackie Robinson was a year ago. He is a fine receiver and is hitting close to .300. Major league clubs other than the Dodgers, Indians and Browns, in* on :li • trail of Negro talent and are expected to sign several within rhe next few w^-eks. The Phillies have been following ‘Goose” Ta tom of the IndianaptYTls Clowns for some time. In the words of Gaper stein, the first sacker Is'described as ’•terrific." Also being watched by scouts s Piper Davis of the Birmingham Black Barons. According to re
ports by several of them, Davis Is the best player in the Negro leagues, batting .355. Although the six-foot three-inch slugger is now playing shortstop, he is considered a natural at first base. The St. Louis Browns have an option on him. Saperstein states that the minors will have to And ard develop their own colored players because of their inability to pay high salaries. Better players In the Negro leagues earn fiom $400 up per month. Only the majors can afford such 'salaries. Sitce most of the Negro players come otf Southern sandlots, scouts will have to turn their attention in that direction. YOl MUST REOISTER To VOTE
