Ala. KKK Launches Drive to Suppress UNAVA, Vets 9 Group BIRMINGHAM (ANP) — Klanism, supported by southern fascists, has reared its ugly head once more to begin another reign of terror—this tine drected aganst he United Negro and Al'.ied Veterans of America and its fight to secure for all Negro veterans, especially those in the south, a decent share of the democracy for which they fought. Evidence that, the Rian is out to crush the gathering movement among Negro veterans is shown in the fact that Mrs.. Durr’s life has ben threatened on two occasions. The threats were contained in two letters received by Mrs. Durr from the klan. In addition, a certain Negro minister, apparently working hand-in-giove with the k’an, visited Mrs. Durr and warned her to end her activities with both UNAVA and the NAACP. . ««** • " ■ " 3 NEW TRUSTEES NAMED FOR ATLANTA U. POLICE PROBE FLOGGING OF HA. MAN, WIFE DECATUR. Ga. (ANP)—DeKalb County police last week were investigating the flogging of a Negro man and his wife at their home on Wesley Chapel road near Lithonia by a band of white men, but were at a loss to establish a motive in the crime. Aggie Herncou, 46, and his wife, Lottie, 40, the victims, were nursing severe wounds of the head and body as the result of the attack by four unmasked white men who entered their home on the ruse of being police in search of stolen articles and then took them into the woods, administered a brutal flogging and shot the woman. Well known and respected In the community, the Herndons could give no reason for the beatings. DeKalb County Police Chief Edward L. Foster was at a loss to explain the crime after several days of probe. The Herndons were sitting in their modest home around 9:30 o’clock Monday night, March 31, when they heard a car drive up. the occupants alight and come up to the door, pounding and demand-
ing entrance on the pretext of being “the law.” Permitted to enter, the men tol l Herndon they were looking for stolen goods. Herndon invited them to search the house, “?* vou’re the law. I’ve got receipts for everything here.” Apparently angered by Herndon’s Invitation, one of the intruders seized ^Herndon’s shotgun and forced the victims out of the house and into the waiting automobile. The Herndons were taken to Arabia lake where a pistol, flash, light and blackjack were employed. One of the men placed his feet on Mrs. Herndon’s neck while continuing the flogging. Another al- . legedly shot her In the legs, wherej upon Herndon broke and ran 1 through the wtrods to a white resi- ! dence about a mile away. Police were called, but failed to find Mrs. I Herndon until the next morning j when she came out of the woods, i dazed and Injured.

Disorderly Conduct Ruling to Be Made By Va. High Court RICHMOND. Va. (ANP)—Exactly what constitutes ‘‘disorderly conduct” will be defined by the Virginia Supreme court of appeals when it begins hearings on another case involving segregation of Negro and white passengers on public carriers. The case in question is that of Miss Lottie E. Taylor, who was arrested and found guilty of disorderly conduct by the circuit court of Fairfax county for refusing to move to the rear of a bus operated by the Virginia State lines. • ' "• In a writ of error entered in the court of appeals. Miss Taylor held that she had not been disorderly, and that the case was not based on the state’s jimerow statute but only on the disorderly conduct' law. Miss Taylor was arrested on the comp’aint of a bus driver as the vehicle passed through Falls church on a trip from Washington. The driver testified that he had requested her to move to the rear, but she refused. Evidence w’as conflicting as to whether her refusal was in a ‘‘loud voice,” but d d not show that there was any scuTling or similar conduct.

REYNOLDS, N. Y. STAGES FIGHT FOR USES FUNDS WASHINGTON (ANP)—If the lepublican leadership in Congress estores to the appropriation cuts made into the budget for the Labor Department and aimed primarily t the United States Employment Service’s supervisory activities Grant Reynol Is, candidate for Congress -against Rep. Adam C. Powell last fall, will be able to ‘ake some of the credit. It Is learned. In swinging the knife, Rep. Tabor (R) of New York, chairman >f the Hous ( e Finance Committee, lopped off 77 per cent of the money allowed USES'. This agency’s sole function today is to see that proper concern is given to thjg work requirements of Negroes In the handling of federal money by the states. This responsibility of enforcement, and the difficulty invoked, arose when the Congress returned the service to state control. The racial relations set-up in the agency is definitely threatened by the cuts. Last week Reynolds was here and conferred with party leaders and pleaded with them to restor a these cuts. He had previously talked with key officials in the USES to make certain that any success his efforts might have in getting the restorations would assure the continuance of the minority group section headed by Thomasina Walker Johnson. He is understood to have confronted arguments of his party that Democrats would be retained in jobs, with the cold logic that If his suggestion was not accepted, the party might find itself defend ing the charge in 1948 that it was tbe GOP which endangered tha rights of Negroes to secure fair treatment by the state employment services.
registered, go down to the courthouse tomorrow and qualify to vote." Wilson reviewed the record of progress in the Negro's history and pointed to the need for passage of the FEPC, anti-poll tax and anti-lynching bills and other legislation necessary to safeguard the rights of all American citib'ens. He stressed the fact that the ballot is the most effective weapon against discrimination an dother injustices.
