SIGLER'S RED SMEAR SCORED BY MICH. NAACP By ROBERT CRUMP DETROIT (AMP)—The Communist "boRey man" now being held tip by Republican Gov. Kim Sigler, in keeping with the Red witchhunt started by the House un-Amer-ican activities committee in Washington. has not only failed to frighten anybody but on the oth«r hand 1 as provoked the entire city to anger. Testifying net'ire the investigating committee. Gov. Sigler said that ’•the local chapter for the Advancement of (’olored People is led by known Communists, mostly Negroes.” The governor went on to say. according to reports from Washington, that "the organization is hacked by the Communist party.” Local NAACP officials, led by thejtev. Robert L. Bradby, Jr., its president, and Edward Swan, executive secretary, issued a statement after a special meeting of the executive board demanding a public retraction by the governor because of his Communist charge against the association made in Washington. The statement said, in part. •'The 20,000 dues paying members of* the Ikdroit branch are deeply disturbed that the governor would use his high office so irresponsi-

bly.” Mr. Sigler’s press secretary seems not to be in accord with the governor’s charge, as the NAACP statement went on to say: •‘The irresponsibility of the governor’s charge is fully illustrated by the confession of his press secretary that Sigler was still trying to discover today (Mon lay) what he was talking about in Washington.”

5,000 War Babies From England Mag Find Homes in U. S. LONDON (NNPA)—Five thou ?and babies fathered by Negro troops statiored in England during the war will be sent to the United States soon on a chartered liner, according to a story pub lished here last Saturday by the London Daily Mail. ‘‘The children, from one to five years old. were left behind by col ored United States troops stationed in Britain during the war,” the newspaper said: ‘‘Their mothers are British. • To save them from growing up social misfits and from possible stigma, the Negro Welfare Society of London and Liverpool are find ing homes for them in colored communities in the United States.” The newspaper quoted E. B. Kendall. Jr., of the society as sayiug: •‘There are 10.000 illegitimate colored children in this country at present. We propose to send half of them to America. We have been promised a liner in nine months’ time.”
