They were recipients of many social courtesies. . . . Mrs. Clara Kimbrough in Roache street, left Tuesday for San Francisco, where she will visit her son and daughter-in-law, Coxswain John R. and Mrs. Kimbrough, the latter of whom was formerly Joyce Venable editor of the East is West column in The Recorder. . . . Mrs. Elizabeth Kimbrough of Norfolk, Va., is visiting Mrs. Raymond Rice and children, and will remain until the return of Mrs. Clara Kimbrough .... Auld Lang Syne Party Highlights Visits Of Former Residents

The beautifully appointed home of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil R. Powell in Boulevard place was the scene of an old acquaintance party last Sunday evening as a courtesy to Mrs. Powell’s sister, Mrs. MurVa\ A. Walls of Louisville, and Miss Erma Lueile Armstead, a teacher of New York City and daughter of Dr. II. A. Armstead, both of whom were former teachers in the

city public schools.

Miss Eva Mae Hatcher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Hatcher is a recent graduate of Indiana university. She majored in sociology with a minor in psychology and while attending college, she was twice the recipient of a merit scholarship. She is a member of the AKA sorority and while attending I. V. was president of the Dargon House, a member of the Interracial Council, International relations club and coed counselor of all Negro girls. Miss Hatcher was also chosen by Dean Mueller to participate in a conference on leadership. She is at present employed at the Dunbar Branch library.

BATTLES SECRETARY VACATIONS Miss Mildred Garrett, secretary to the director, Mr. Holiday, is now on a well-deserved vacation from her many duties at the Senate Avenue Branch Service Men's Center. Miss Garrett is the charming young lady you find at the typewriter when you enter, but her duties are many besides typing. She keeps the records of the committee meetings andrmembers, the hours of the volunteers (including the cadettes), makes the monthly lists of volunteers on which they record their own hours, and is telephone girl, office boy, hostess, checkroom girl, and ‘‘Information’* as the need requires. The director, assistant director, Mr. Bacon, Service Men’s Center Volunteers, and the service men and women whom Miss Garrett has served wish her a very happy vacation and look forward to her return. Miss Beverly Anderson, a new volunteer on the office staff. Is helping with typing and filing in her absence.

ANOTHER UNSUNG HERO Isaac Bacon, assistant director, is another unsung hero. Mr. Bacon, in the absence of the director, does a fin© job meeting the emergencies that arise when he is on duty. He is in sympathy with the service men’s problem, having a son in the South Pacific and two daughters who are cadettes. Mrs. Bacon is a volunteer who serves on the Cookie Committee, and i Mr. Holiday and volunteers are I very proud of the assistant direci tor.

RETURNS FROM VACATION Charles Wadsworth, a recent addition to the Canteen Committee, returned from his vacation and was on duty Sunday morning serving coffee and doughnuts to the service men and women. The Canteen Committee welcomes Mr. Wadsworth and his assistance to Mr. Battles who has rendered the coffee service unassisted for one year and six months.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Alien and son. Wilbur, of Detroit, have returned to their home after visiting Mrs. Allen’s sister, Mrs. G. R. Jackson. Mrs. Jackson entertained Thursday afternoon. Guests were Mesdames T. C. Johnson, Luke Phillips, David Jackson, O. B. Johnson and Wilma Edwards. Mrs. Alien is a noted elocutionist and will be remembered as Miss Catherine Stone of Bloomington. It isn’t too late (we hope) to thank Mrs. Whitney for the beautiful chart listing the personnel of the center. It was a source of admiration from

all the visitors during the anniversary celebration.

The Cadette Committee of which Mrs. Frieda Parker is chairman, has a regimental organization which follows: Mrs. Parker, general; Mrs. Mary Johnson, colonel; Mrs. Mildred Johnson, major of the first regiment; Mrs. Ruth Wales and Mrs. Margaret Digbee, captains of first regiment; Mrs. Pearl Chambers, major of the second regiment; Mrs. Tessie Campbell and Mrs. Jo1,sephine Baker, captains of the second regiment. Other members of the committee are Mrs. Edith Banks, Mrs. Aletha DuValle, Mrs. ; Clara Gill, Mrs. Mayme Huffman, ! Mrs. Lucy Temple, and Mrs. Edith ! Overton. Cadettes hold the rank of lieutenants of the platoons. This is one of the most active committees as the cadettes go to Serv- ; ice Club 3 at Camp Atterhury. Also Watanan Hospital, damp j Atterhury, Billings Hospital, Fart Harrison, Stout Field, Fort Knox, and Godman Field as the need requires. These five young women give unstintingly of their time and money, for they pay their own transportation when it is necessary. For the anniversary the cadettes, under the leadership of Mrs. Chambers, presented the center with a beautiful silk flag on a standard, complete with gold eagle and gold card and tassel. It is a most appropriate addition and beauty spot in the foyer. Visiting hours are still nine (9) a. m. to four (4) p. m., daily. Welcome!
