Elizabeth Brizentine-Taft ~ EEDLESS TO SAY, that our vacation was everything in every way what we expected. We left last Sunday morning while most of you slept and registered at the very fine Pershing Hotel in Windy City at about 6 a.m. Then we proceeded to the home of my grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Ker-sbaw-W ard in E. 50th place where we enjoyed breakfast and a family get together. My father, J. Emmett Brizentine and ins friend of Brazil, accompanied us to Chicago, my father to spend the week with his mother, Mrs. Ward and Mr. Williams 10 visit lelatives.

We were later entertained at Sunday dinner by my grandmother after which we returned to the hotel, where we were liosts to a group of Mr. Griffie’s Elk brothers and their friends .... 'Monday night, w’e were guests at dinner at the lovely pclatiai home of Mr. and Mrs. Julius E. Boyd in So. Michigan avenue, in a secluded icsidential section of Chicago where Negroes are making rapid progress and history in buying lots and building their own homes. * * * This dinner pioved to be another family affair in as much as my father was also a guest; Mrs. Boyd’s father, John Robin son of Hopkinsville, Ky., was present and Mr. Boyd’s mother, Mrs. Boyd was also present. The dinner was w f ell prepared and tasty and afterwards w’e enjoyed bits of conversation on every scope of life with after-dinner music and cocktails. Mrs. Boyd is to be remembered to her many friends here as Rose (Honey) Robinson a sister of Mrs. Camille Williams and Mrs. Betty Buckner and the daughter of Mrs. Charles Taylor in Locketield Gardens, who recently had been visiting in Chicago with the Boyda accompanied by her husband Mr. Taylor. ^ > * * Still continuing a reunion in family circles, we w’ere entertained at dinner Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. Gritfie's cousin, Mrs. Lottie B. Murphy at which time other honorees were visiting Elk Daughters and Brothers from Wilmington, Dela. A sumptuous fried chicken dinner was served wdth all the trimmings ami the evening was spent in get-acquainted conversations. , * * * After a wlyrlaway four-day visit in W’indy City proper, we were exceedingly glad to withdraw from further activities to go to Chicago Heights where w’e week-ended with Fairy Lee and Herschel Starks .... and still it was a family reunion because his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Starks of Burnett were also there and she is a distant cousin .... Fairy Lee had recently been hostess to her sister, Mrs. Sue Anderson of Indianapolis, and lo and behold, the week before, Mrs. Nora Williams and friends of Indianapolis had been entertained by her while they W'ere in Chicago for the East-West Classic. * * * All 111 all, w’e had a grand time and yet were well rested aftfcr leaving Chicago Heights and were glad to get back to the routine of daily work. . . . Upon returning we find that many of you also have been aw T ay on much-needed vacations and we are certain that you too found joy, rest and much happiness while away. * * # Mrs. Marie Walker, Dt. Ruler of Mt. Calm Temple, 562, Vice Dt. Ruler. Mrs. Maggie Hoskins and Edna Young, chairman of the Ada Abrams Booster club flew to Chicago last Sunday morning for the Elks convention and were glad to see their efforts not in vain. . . . Ada Abrams Jones w’as elected with 304 votes as Grand Trustee of the National Grand Lodge of I. B. P. O. Elks of the World congratulations to you Mom Abrams, we are certain that you will successfully and efficiently fulfill the duties of this office to the best of your ability and stamina! * * # Mrs. Gladys Byers has returned from a two weeks’ vacation in Chicago. She w’as accompanied home by Mrs. Charles B itter of Wheatland, Pa., who visited a few’ days, returning to her home Tuesday morning . . .. Mr. and Mrs. John E. Taylor are spending a very lovely vacation with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. B. ^Tones in their spacious home in So. Wabash street, Chicago . Mrs. Nellie Lee and grand daughter Nellie Lee Houston of Louisville arc house guests of Mrs. Mary Brow’n in Highland place. . . . Mrs. Dora Cole and sons. Robert and Gary and Mr. end Mrs. Frank Tanzy and son, George have returned from Cincinnati where they visited the Zoo while there . * * * Miss Anna Lewis of Dunbar apts., is vacationing in Atlanta, Ga Mrs. Walter Starks, Dunbar apts., has returned after a two-wceks’ vacation in Hopkinsville, Ky. ... Miss Mary F Wilson and father, Thomas Taylor and nephew Wm. E. Taylor jr., are leaving Thursday for Chicago to visit a few days. They will be registered at DuSable Hotel and will be entertained by Mrs. Dolly Cross relatives and friends. Mrs. General Betty w-as pleasantly surprised when friends on the Point of North Port, Mich., prepared a buffet dinner in honor of her birthday. Huge baskets of food were brought and set on a beautifully decorated table. Much fun was to be had an£l various games were played with dancing also a feature ol the evening’s entertainment. Mrs. Betty received many lovely gifts including five new r 20-dollar bills from Mr. Betty Guests w’ere Messrs, and Mesdames Williams, Tally, Mesdames Jones, Hutchins, Johnson, Scott, Dunn, Campbell, Findley, Minnie Rhodes, and Messrs. Wilson and Cravy and Buchanan. * * # Oscar Lillard surprised his wife with a party last Saturday evening in honor of their tenth wedding anniversary. Dinner W’as served by candlelight with autumn flowers as a centerpiece of the table and the couple received many lovely gifts. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Booker, Mr. and Mrs Mitchell Walker and the Howard Filmores .... Mrs. Lillard was hostess Tuesday evening to a bridge party as a farewell party for Mrs. Walker. , * * * Mrs. Robert Hill (formerly Lillian Thompson) w'as hostess to a lovely luncheon at the Coffee Pot last week in honor of two of her old childhood friends, w’ith whom she has not been associated since childhood, Mesdames Daisy Dafford and Jessie Simmons of Tairon, N. C., and Dudley, N. C., respectively. The two are sisters of Rev. Plummer D. Jacobs and Atty. Carey Jacobs. Mrs. Plummer Jacobs was also a guest at tlie luncheon . . . f Mr. and Mrs. Lavelle Walker and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Oswell and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Enix of Indianapolis spent the week-end with Mr. Enix’s uncle, Fred Hill and family in Bloomington. . . . Mr. Walker was recently taised in Trinity No. 18, F. & A. M. Mr. Waiker responded in behalf of his wife and himself, expressing their thanks and appreciation and deep regrets in having to leave the city and exhorted the members to ‘carry on’ to greater heights.

Atty. John Rrowder. president of the Gibraltar Industrial Insurance company lias just returned from ltf« vUeafion. While away Mr. Rrowder went as far as New Orleans. La., where he was a guest of Ur. E. M. Dover, one of the prominent dentists of the city. He al so conferred with a number of in sura nee executives who are operating many successful companies in New Orleans. He also visited Petersburg, his home where he spent a number of days with his sister Mrs. Threatt. While in Petersburg he also visited the homo of the former congressman Mr. Mitchell, and was welcomed. Mr., Mit chell has a palatial home, one of the finest in the state, occupied by no one but him and his * beloved wife whom Mr. Rrowder had the pleasure of meeting. His home is a credit to the colored people in the state of Virginia and he lias made other realestate investments for tlie sole purpose of.hettering the housing conditions. After visiting Washington. New York and Philadelphia. Mr. Rrowder arriv'd in Indianapolis Tuesday.

Local Talent Presents Colossal Show At Camp

Local talent once again scored heavily in the hearts and minds of servicemen and women at Camp Atterbury’s No. 1 theater at which time Erroll Grandy was featured with Four Kings and A Jack. Mary Alice Smith, blues singer and Maurice Winston, song dileniator. Members of the Four Kings and A Jack are Carl Maynard, Jack Bridges, Emerson Senora, Win. Cox and Wesley Montgomery. Samuel H. Johnson Takes New York Bride

Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cogdell of New York City announce the marriage of their daughter, Helen Ann to Samuel H. Johnson, son of Mrs. Fannie Gill, which took place Sunday Aug. 27 at the home of the bride’s parents. Miss Eugenia V. Spencer was maid of honor and Daniel Cogwell, brother of the bride, was best man. Rev. Samuel Bellamy, pastor of Shaw’ Methodist church performed the doublering ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are at home at 365 W. 26th st.

City Wide Chorus Offers Successful Program Mrs: Mary Madison and her CityWide chorus rendered a successful musical program last Sunday at Princeton’s Bethel AME church of which Rev. A. H. Davis is pastor, and who also sponsored the chorus. The church was filled to its capacity and as a courtesy to the sing trs a sumptions dinner and supper was served by the church committee. Guest speaker of the evening was Evangelist Forester. Other participants were the Indianapolis Gospel Singers, an auxiliary of the chorus, and Mrs. Madison's granddaughters. Shirley Rochella and Joyce Preston, ages four and five. The chorus and guests will l»e presented at Lyles Station. Ind., at Bethel AME September 22. sponsored by Rev. Brown, pastor of the church. The group is also open f for local engagements.

Club-At-Larg’e Reopens FallWinter Activities Tlie Club At Lirge heralds the beginning of its fall and winter program in the Aaron room at the Club home Thursday Sept. 7th at 8:30 p.m. A most, pleasant sirrprise is in store for all who come •out as a variety of interests will make up the program of the evening. The Club At Large seeks the co-operation of its many members who are‘needed to make a bigger and better success of our endeavors. Chas. V. Turner is president.

The local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People youth council climaxed its recent membership drive with a semi-formal at Jordan Hall, which was one of the most successful social events of the season. with youth in attendance from all over the city. Recognition was given Miss Mildred Beamon, who having brought in more than seventymembers was awarded the title. “Miss NAACP” and as an additional award, she w-as sent with all expenses paid as honored delegate to the National NAACP Emergency War conference in Chicago. Other delegates were: Miss Ophelia.Clark, president: Clarence Robinson, vic-e: James Michael, campaign director and Miss Rorris Taylor. The delegates returned with renewed inspiration and encouragement for the advancement of all colored people. Mrs. Priscilla Dean Lewis president of Senior branch and seponsor of the Youth Council devoted her entire efforts towards the aid and supervision of the youth delegates. Rev. O. A. Calhoun was co-sponsor. Miss Beamon is an Attacks graduate, is a member of New Bethel Baptist church and entered Indiana uui iversity August 29.
