he was going to win or finish last until the final killing outburst 01 speed and stamina with his kang-

aroo stride.

Woodruff, the lanky, long-strid-ing University cf Pittsburgh freshman, who was viitually an unknown until he conquered Ben Eastman, world’s record holder in the Olympic tryouts at Randall’s Island last month, broke England’s stranglehold on the SOO-tneter title with a daring race. He was boxed in, had to run wide and suffered a spike wound on his knee, yet the powerful running Woodruff finished two meters ahead of 'Mario Lanzi, Italy’s greatest runner in 1 minute 52.9 seconds. Considering the weather, the distance he traveled and the trouble he encountered Woodruff’s time was remarkaible even though considerably short of the Olympic mark of 1:49.8. Woodruff’s victory inter: upted a series of four straight British triumphs and was the first time an American had won the race since Ted Meredith flashed to victory as a schoolboy at Stockholm in 1912. Woodruff Boxed In Knowing nothing about pace and lacking experience. Woodruff got himself in a jam at the start. He was boxed in before the field paced by Phil Edwards, veteran Canadian Negro, reached the first turn. Somewhere in this shuffle he was spiked, but the six-foot-three-inch Negro didn’t even know about the injury until after the

i ace.

Finishing the first lap, Woodruff, eating up the ground, was in the lead, trailed in order by Edwards, Kazimierz Kucharski, Poland; Charlie Romsbostel, Evansville, Ind., Gerald Backhouse, Australia, and Mario Lanzi, Italy. Heading into the turn after the first lap, Edwards got the lead but he couldn’t shake Woodruff, who dogged his heels until the last turn. The American drew abreast of Edwards on the curve, unmindful of the ground he was losing, and when they hit the straightaway, big John turned on the heat. He ran Edwards into the ground, and then staved off a desperate chalU""'-' by Lanzi, who passed three men with toils finishing “kick.” Edwards came in third and Kucharski. fourth. HornbOs-

el and Harry Williamson, High 'oint, N. C., finished fifth and ixth, respectively.

OWENS SAYS ‘‘HELLO” FROM BERLIN

BERLIN. Aug. 3—(Special— From thousands of miles away, the mighty Jesse Owens delighted ly “aired” sentiments for his wife and mother in Cleveland. The Ohio State flash won the 100-meter final at the eleventh Olympic games and the first thing he did after winning was to sprint up the Olympic Stadium steps and broadcast a message to his wife and mother in Cleveland. He said: “I am very glad to win. I am sure anxious to see you. Am coming home shortly.” As to the race itself the modest ebony flyer continued: “It was one of my best races. The competition was the stiffest I have ever met. Rain made the track heavy and slow spoiling the chance for a new record. “For the first time in the Olympics, I felt several of them pushing right at my shoulders. Metcalfe, especially, pushed me every , step of the way and I felt him [ every second. He ran a great j ra<ce. M • Hitler’s salute to him after the race pleased Owens. He said: “It strikes me, he’s a good sport. I liked his smile.”
