JAILED WHEN HE TRYS TO ESCAPE

GARY. Iiid., June 20.—(Special) —Joe Howard fell into the hands of the law when he became frightened at the approach of a police car and an accomplice escaped while he attempted to outdistance the police car in his. Last Sunday afternoon at Nineteenth and Washington streets, police saw Joe Howard, age 30. 515 West Twenty-second street, double parked and drew along side to warn them to move on for the offense. As the police car approached a man jumped from the Howard car and Howard speeded up, with police becoming suspicious and givMig chase. Howard was caught at Twenty-sixth and Polk after several shots were fired. He is held on at open charge, though he made no statement.
