Red Lace Hearts i Farm Decorations At Valentine Party

Beautiftil In .every detail was the valentine party iven -by Mrs. Mamie Davis of Newcastle, Saturday evening at the Women’s Federated club home in North Capitol avenue. The parlors were decorated with red and lace heart* and streamers of red carnations. The service table which was laid in the north parlor was beautiful with a centerpiece of red sweet peas and fernery and red candles tied with white tulle. Heart napkins, silver and crystal were used in the service. A maid in white with red tulle bows and a butler served punch, heart candies and nuts throughout the evening. Bert Mitchell’s orchestra playe dfor the dancing under the management of R. Roy Pope. Cards were played in the hack parlor. The lovely gowns of the ladies blended with the formal dress of the men made a striking picture. * Among the out-of-town guests were: Mr. and Mrs. Earl Luster, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Singleton, Eugene Bailey, Mrs. Minnie Ford, Smithy Briscoe, of Newcastle and Mrs. Mildred Vaughn, of Muncie. The hostess was charming in pink suede lace. She was assisted by Mrs. Mary Cobb who wore a pale blue crepe creation with pearl accessories, Mrs. Lena Hardeston who wore a green gown with lace bell sleeves and Miss Lela Simpkins in black satin. During the intermissions, Miss Beatrice Hewlett, pianist, and John Wiley Hawkins, baritone, entertained.

Phi Delta Affair

In spite of the sub zero weather on last Sunday afternoon, an intensely interesting group listened to Norman L. Merrifield in his discourse of past and contemporary musicians of our race at the beautifpl formal tea given by the Tau, chapter of Phi Delta Kappa sorority celebrating Negro History Week, at the Phyllis Wheatley Y. W. C. A. Mr. Merrifield was very ably assisted by Roger R. Hurd and Robert Venaable, tenors, and Miss Susie Pruitt, pianist, ail demonstrated works

of Negro composers mentioned in the discussion.

Whole-hearted attention was given Rev. J. L. White as he delivered a message on ‘Negro History,” replete with informatiQn on characters

The sorority colors of crimson were cafried out in ’ the decoraand gold and the sorority insignia lions. The table was beautifully laid also carrying out the sorority colors. Tall crimson tapers, tied with gold tulle bows in bonders of sparkling crystal added much to the table decorations. The tapers flanked a floral centerpiece of fresh lilies, the sorority flower. Silver tea service, flatware and delicate china, some of which, was imported and some family heirlooms, completed the table which war covered with a dainty cream lace cloth. Soror Cockrell, honor guest, was lovely in a black velvet tea gown with pearl accessories and a shoulder corsage of fresh gardenias; basileus, Jacqueline Davis, who poured, was charming in a tailored tea frock of silver satin with a slight train with rhinestones and silver accessories; Mrs. S. Jr., organizer and leader of the State Negro i Industrial Congress and State representative to the National Negro ' conference which met in Chicago last week will be the speaker for the second Educational conference under the auspices of the Elizabth Carter federation of clubs at the club home in N. Capitol avenue, February 18 at 3:30 p. m. Rev. Clair will give a resume of the problems and results of th* Chicago meeting which was attended hy delegates and leaders from all parts of the Nation. There were exhaustive discussions on all phases of the New Deal as it affects the Negro workers and especially as it relates to the future of the Negro youth. It was seen that close organization will' serve as a powerful instrument in meeting these crises an dto this end women’s groups in every community must respon dto the Call for union and participation in every movement. The speaker will be prepared to give the findings of th conference at the discussion hour following and he will answer questions.^ A large group of younger women will be in attendance.
