History of Barnes M. E. Church
Barnes M. E. church had its beginning in Green Leaf Hall, twentyeighth and Rader streets, in 1887, under leadership of Rev. T. R. Printlss, deceased. In 1888 Mr. Barnes (white), a close friend of Rev. Printiss, donated a lot on West twenty-fifth street near Rader, as ei personal gift. This marked the first Methodist church to he organized north of Fall Creek Blvd. The following men were selected is trustees: George Anderson, Pet>r O’Bryant, Alonzo McClure, Samlel Harvey, and Basil Alley. George Bollen, local preacher, was in the
uiginal organization.

Mr. Tturgeon was a prosperous farmer and left two farms to his sisters, Mrs. Abel and Mrs. Hannah Kelley of Louisville, Kentucky. He was 85 years old. Honors Husband Mrs. Katherine Hill entertained in honor of her husband with a stag party, celebrating his birthday, on February 22 at tlieir home, 336 West Twenty-sixth stret. The house was beautifully decorated and the table was centered with a large birthday cake, which was decorated with huge enqrry tree and hatchet with birthday greetings. At each end of the table stood cherry trees laden with green foliage ai)d red cherries. Music and games were features of the evening. A lovely buffet luncheon was served.
