JEANETTE BUNN First Synopsis Jane Anderson who lives with her parents on a little farm not far from Zaneville, Ohio, finds • young man lying in the apple orchard. At first, she is frightened but loses her fear when he tosses an arm and groans. She knows that he is ill.
CHAPTER TWO
T/iiftlng the limp and helpless hand that was burning with fever, she
[knelt beside him and looked appealing at her father and mother as they came up. She did want them to take him in and make him well
again.
The question of why she should be so interested in a perfect stranger had not actually formed itself in her mind. It was exciting to come out on a calm October morning to pick up apples and pick up a stranger instead. A sick one and young. Maybe romantic, too. Jane was at the romantic age,—
•r-i. , - . u . .u . u \ Ai twenty-two, one can fancy all
beat that she so°n j SO rts of things and Jane was both
twenty-two and good at fancying. “Come on, fellow. Sit up and
found. How irregular it was. I She sat back on her heels for a moment looking hard at the face of the stranger. The thin lips were colorless and pinched at tne corners with suffering. In spite of the | dust and grime of the road, the olive skin was pallid. His hair which held the traces of a part, lay in stiff rings over his head plastered
with the dirt of the road.
Something terrible must have happened to this man to bring him
here in such a coiiuitiun.
He seemed to be taore than just a. tramp. His hands showed signs of care. His dark suit was of a
good material and cut.
Shaking herself into action. Jane sped back over the leaves to the
|house calling:
“Yoo, hoo. Dad! Mother! Come
here. Dad! Yoo, hoo!”
The door was opened quickly land Otis Anderson appeared holding the shortsickle tnat ne had been I sharpening. The white-haired |d of Mrs. Anderson could just
seen back of him.
As she taiked, she walked partlly forward and partly backward, drawing them on with her — Mr. Anderson still carrying the sickle land Mrs. Anderson trying to rub [the pie-dough from her fingers. *T wonder how he got there,” Iwent on Jane. “I was just enjoyJing the fine air and apple scent when my eyes fell on him as he lay sprawled under the tree by the road. At first. I was afraid but (when he groaned. I knew that he jwas sick. And Mother, he looks so jnice. I mean, he nas nice hands Irnd clothes.” she hastened to add las her mother gave her a piercing
I look.
Quickening her pace, she called jto the attention of her parents to jthf figure that they could see. "There he is.” For some reason, she was anxilous that this stranger should not Icome into the disfavor of her mothler whose word upon such matters |was law. She hurried on to hide the warm flush that she could feel (spreading over her face She reached him first. She
let’s have a look at you.” ^ . As Mr. Anderson spoke, he halflifted the man by the shoulders. “Say, Boy, it isn’t all that bad. Open your eyes. Look at me. Can you? We are going to help you to
pull out of this.”
His only response was a restless tossing of the head and an incoher-
eti mumbling.
“He can't. Dad, He is all in. We will have to carry ihm. Can you do it alone or shall I take his feet?” “No. You would be in my way.” “I’ll fix the steel couch in the front room,” said Mrs. Anderson as she turned toward the house. “Come on. Jane. Get some towels and a pan of watm water. Put a pan of milk over the fire. He looks half-
starved to me.”
Everything had been done for the comfort of the way farer and he was showing a marked improvement ' r
each day.
He spent most of his time sleeping and reading while the Andersens carried on their work. When Jane had a moment to spare, she slipped in to sit by his bed if he happened to be lying down or to stand by his chair and chat a while. She was always full of news about the latest brood of chickens or a new idea in regard to the development of the ranch. Philip Harris enjoyed these visits. They took his mind off of him self. That was what he needed more than any medicine a doctor could give. His trouble was nerves. Anderson had been very decent about questions. He had asked none and had accepted Philip’s simple explanation of his condition—nerves and that he had taken to the road for a change. Lost his money and so found his way, Lroke, hungry, il!. into the orchard of the Anderson
place.
How he happened to be sufferinc of nerves—well, he didn’t go into that. He did not need to. Otis Ar derson said he knew a gentHra-in when he saw one.

Three Bottles Helped Her
“From a girl I suffered with severe headaches and vomiting nearly every month. Three bottles of Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound made me entirely well. I am now fifty years old. Recently I had a nervous breakdown from overwork so I am taking the Compound again. It helps me do my work and drives away that tired feeling.”— Mrs. Ella M. Roberts, igooN.
