>S ANGELES, July 6—“Amer real ctrength consists in the of healthy differences," Rabbi Rudolph I. Coffee, Francisco, addressing the Association for the Adsnt of Colored People, now aJuiual conference here, ty night. ty thought saved this at its birth," continued >ffee. "The result is every religion is respected. A miof one in the United States ita, and surely the Ameri Negroes, totaling ten million souls, one-tenth of the >n of our country, have abrights which must not be

incially America is today thest country In the world ttoe most powerful nation the has ever known. But all this iped up wealth and strength betas a Frankenstein unless ierica emphasizes her spiritual which means a utilization __ _je rights of her minorities. : "America is infinitely richer because of Paul Lawrence Dunbar, id Hayes and Florence Mills, much poorer would America we never had your magnifi ceat contribution to music? The white man simply cannot combine your undying optimism despite terrible oppression, with confidence in God as expressed in the Negro melodies. Therefore, 1 say, America needs the Negro and bids you stand firm. If you surrender, America is poorer, but you cannot surrender. “The Negro's pride In his past, his hopes for the future, his selfrespect, will not allow him t o merge his identity with the majority. A Negro who will not be faithful to his own can never win the

respect of upstanding white men. Israel Zangwill was hopelessly wrong in "The Melting Pot.” Amer ica will not allow us to~melt even If we wished, "Every majority group in timebecomes despotic. Only when there is a strong, aggressive and assertive minority does the majority do its best. Because / America needs strong minorities, it is a national disgrace that Negro children receive less public schooling than do white children. The citizens of every state, Alabama and California, Mississippi and New York, if they are true to their highest ideals, will give the Negro child the very same educational advantages they offer the white. States that make the education of the black child one whit inferior to that of the white are hurting the Negro not half as much as they are wounding their country’s future." oOo

In Chicago they are in exclusive charge of two filling stations; in St. ixnii.s one; and in Minneapolis, one, and employed us attendants in Springfield, 111., and Kansas City, Mo. They are also operating four greasing stations i n Chicago. These jobs are the result of an appeal to Colonel Robert W. The league used the company’s successful operation of' its only station then menned by Negroes to prove that the use of Negroes would not cause a decrease in business; but on the contrary vvonid stimulate business from Negroes.. In the case of this station the general physical up pearance so improved under Negro attendants and the business so increased that it is one of the best in St. Louis. number of delegates in attendance showed that the women of the state are concentrating their effoits malnIj on the purchase of club headquarters, charity and social uplift work. The reports of iieultti, socials service, religious education and health committees showed that the colored women were wide aweke to their oppc rtunities und that they were uniting their efforts for the advancement of the cause of the negro. Many visitors were introduced dur- • ing the Kc.-Mon and many paid tribute to tin- efforLs of Mrs. Crump In purchasing the new headquarters. The report uf the financial secretary of the trustee board showed that to date tt,e Indiana women have paid $2-,220 on the club home in addition to tire purchase of numerous articles of furniture. The anniversary gifts were most satisfying and showed the wide - interest which the women have in the State headquarters. Thg Thursday Coterie has purchased a piano for tlie headquarters, this being on* of the most pretencios donations. Clubs which have liiien were the Altruistic, the West Baden clubs. Altruistic Junif rs and the Urawfordsvilie clubs. Mrs. Goins and Mrs. Meti laf of Richmond, presented the home with three beautiful hand-made rugs and" Mrs. Ella Settles gave an embroidered spread for th^flrt department. The idea of n State headquarters has been convincing for the visitors and delegates and a -plan for individual assessment has been made whereby money to pay for the club home could be raised in one year. Under tills plan each club woman in the state would be asked to give 5 dollars next year. Mrs. •Julia Reed, is president of. the ^Eliabtezh farter council, which has entertained the Federation in a way to be remembered. oOo
