Tho petition waa granted aud a church waa organitad under the title of Mt. Zion Baptiat rhnrcb on Fletcher Farm, three miles eouth of the city, by the Jtev. Win. Neal. Those In the organization were Jesse McCrocklin and wife, (c|e- * ceased). Sister Jennie Williams, mother of Mrs. McCrocklin (deceased); Sister Payton Blackr well (dbceased) and Brother Prince Adams, (deceased). The first converts were Chapman Blakey, Lucinda Blakey, Ellen Yqunger, and Henry Elzy, who were bapby Rev. Wm. Neal, the pas>r, in March, 1871. As the members of the church later moved Into the city they concluded to move the place of worship Into the city also, and in 3873 commenced worshiping in a bouse which had lately been occupied by the colored Christian .’hurch, on the corner of the Lafayette railroad and Second St. now known as 11th St. This had been a soldiers’ barracks but it had been o fitted up ittably for a house of worship by to Christian church and was finally sold to the Mt. Zion Baptist church. I
