POLITICAL ACTION

An Indiana Writer For Indiana Folks By>£uy T. Hawkins Many hands undoubtedly were raised in holVor at a recent news dispatch to the effect that a New York Episcopal Church will allow the dancing of modern steps, including the renowned "Charleston” in its parish hall. The pastor is reported to have said that he could see nothing wrong about the dance and that he would prefer to see the members of his congregation enjoying themselves in their parish hall than in some down-town amusement resort. “I can't see where the boys and girls are going to perdiction just because they want to enjoy themselves " he is quoted saying. The attitude of the Eastern rector seems pleasingly sane, lie apparently reorganises the responsibility of the church to win the confidence of youth through a kindly understanding rather than to alienate the young people by a policy of stem repression. A certain measure of restraint and constraint are necessary for proper character development, of course. But the church might better attempt first to win the friendship of the young men and young women before setting out to definitely shape and point their lives.

EDITOR OF INDIANAPOLIS RECORDER

SIR:

After reading the article, on the proposed ordinance of residential segregation of Negroes, I huve come to the conclusion, that it is time for us to stand for our rights as a race and citizens of this city. I have given the question due consideration and I can not see in no way, where we have

A 4«ftaK« program, of united actfrity in local politics is very necessary on the part of the Negro citizens at this tme. The grievances and differences among and between local Negro politicians and citizens in politics, and the people has long, stood between the people and their full and just return from political endeavor. Every Negro must be a politician today to the extent, that he gets fair return on th use of his suffrage. And this is essential to his well being and survial in our community. When you fail to exercise your right of suffrage you lose on civic rights and other possibilities what you deserve and need most

ly-

An individual or citizen cannot refrain from co-operation because, he does not like or approve of some others or their activity. You may find yourself after while, lined up side by side for ff^If preservation with these same individuals. We all have some things in common; why make it a matter of expediency? A Co-operative political program in action now would save the day. It will pay returns in civic, pilitical and other spheres. When we have already obtained good results from such methods or procedure, you can take up grievances against—individuals. A program and unified activity wiU rectify the patronage condition. Chicago, New York and several other cities justify such a claim. The only hope for the Negro citizen in Indianapolis in the future depends on how he uses his political possibilities. We may have to make and unmake a few individuals to lead the activity, but we must make them. And while we are making them, we will keep on making them. And when we have to unmake them, we will unmake them, and keep on unmaking them. Yesterdav was the time ot begin, at least today. You can not afford to wait for the striking results of grave emergencies to drive you into action. Speak up, what you are ready to do now? Be ready when you speak, to contribute your part little or much. “THE NEGRO GIRI”

The Negfro frirl often is ne;;lected and discouraged. She has little of real help in her efforts to he and to do. She is neglected even by her ow.n parents and relatives. In regard to work, the Negro girl must take what the white girl does not want, or what is most irksome, hazardous, or difficult. For economic reasons she is often compelled to live amid unwholesome and dangerous surroundings. Despite all of these serious handicaps, this unfortunate girl is severely censured for her shortcomings; but she is entitled to the most sincere

sympathy, instead.

Say what you will concerning this most neglected and much abused Negro Girl; prate of her weaknesses, unmercifully condemn her faults, scorn her if you will, curse her, trample her in the dust, if you are uncharitable enough to do so; but when the unbiased record shall be made it will be that considering
