SOUTH REJECTS PLAN TO UNITE CHURCH BODIES

NASHVILLE Tann. Dec. 21—Unofficial figures published by the sec* ular press of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, reveal that the proposed unification of the northern and southern branches of the Methodist Episcipal Church failed by 1,649 votes. Two-thirds of the possible voting strength of the Church was necessary to carry the proosition. This was not gained, although the unification plan won a majority of the votes, the final counting standing, 4.458 for and 4,086 against. Unification was first indorsed by the northern wing of the Church at its convention in Springfield, Mass., in 1923. This indorsement at the time was considered a signal victory in the Northern Church and was made possible largely by the eloquency and influence of three colored members of the conference. Strong, determined opposition immediately developed in the southern church, the principal objection being against the power that Negro bishops would have in the united Church. Two leaders of the southern church. Bishops Moozon and Candler, campaigned on the affirmative and negative sides of the proposition, respectively. Candler made an unabashed appeal to the prejudice in the southern states and capitulated to the unchristian feeling of superiority among the southern Methodists. Bishop Mouzon became a great champion of toleration and Christianity. aa— — ■ ■■ i Urf'VQ— ■■ ■ ■, ,■ b Pew and
