D. Brittle, of Louisville, Ky., rendered one of his most beautiful musical programs, assisted by our home talent. Everybody sat spellbound as they listened to his charming singing. THE INTERNATIONAL SENES
to xii, £, 7a: nta ry
Text of the Lesson, II Sam. xi,22 7a—Memory Verses, xii, 5. Golden Text, Pa. li, 10—Commu Prepared by Rev. D. M. Stearmt. Instead of assigning us a helpful les
son, such as chapter viii, which wc briefly touched upon in our last, or the beautiful story of David’s kindness to the son of Jonathan (chapter b ), the committee has given us in this lesson one of the worst phases of the l umas heart, w hich is always and on y deceitful above all things and desperately wicked (Jer. xvii, 9, 10). He who alone knows and can search the heait has caused this and all similar records to be written that we might see more clearly that all are sinners anc that there is none righteous—no, not one— but that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners and that the greatest sinner may be saved ai d the greatest backslider forgiven nrd re stored. To find such a developm?nt ol our sinful human nature in such a man as David after all that the Lord had done for him is truly humiliating and. should lead us all ta say, “Woe is me!” for who is there to whom the prophet might not say concerning thi* or some other phase of our sinful na-
ture. “Thou art the man” (xii, 7).
When we remember that "the thought of foolishness is sin” and that a siuful look is in the sight of God equal to a sinful act (Prov. xxiv, 9; Matt, v, 28) and that, as C. H. Spurgeon said “Whatever the Lord Jesus Christ would not think or say or do is sin,” it leads one to cry out, “God be merciful to me, a sinner." and to say, “If tbou. Lord, shouldest mark iniquiths, O Lord, who shall stand?” (Luke xviii, 13; Ps. cxxx, 3. 4.) But the comfort is that He can make the vilest whiter than snow (Ps. li. 7). It is interesting to note that, whike the child yet lived, David fasted and wept and lay all night u|>on the earth, for he said, “Who can tell whether God will be gracious to me, that the child may live?” Rut when the child died and the will of God w\as known thi>n he said: “Wherefore should I fast? Can I bring him hack again? I shall go to him, but be shall not return to me" (verst*s 15-23). When those dear to us are sick and we cannot tell win t the will of God is for them and us It becomes us to wait earnestly upon Him for their health, but always in submission to His will. When He has made plain His will, whatever it may be, it becomes ua to say, “Even so. Father,” for we know that “as for God. His way is perfect” (ilaft xi. 2(5; Ps. xviii, 30). In verses 24, 25, we have the two names of Bathsheba’s next child, Solomon and Jedidiah. The lat ter, os in the margin, signifies “beloved of the Lord,” for the Lord loved him and sent by the hand of Nithan

Solomon before he was born, saying to David, “Behold, a son shall be bore to thee who shall be a man ol rest, • • * and 1 will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his dnjs” (1 Chron. xxii. 9). He said, “His shall be Solomon,” which, according to the margin, means “peaceable. There are just seven men in the Bible story who were named before they were born—five in the Old Testament and two in the New Testament. Find the others and consider them. Let ue give the rest of our time to the very suggestive story of Mepbiboshci b in chapter ix. When David came to the kingdojm ht made inquiry for any who might be living of the house of Saul thrt he might show them kindness for Jona than's sake. He found that there was a son of Jonathan who was lan e on both feet, his nurse having let him fall when he was five years old a? she took him up to flee with him at the time of his father’s death (II San. iv 4). His being lame because ol fault of another reminds ns tha : the whole race is lame on both feet be cause Adam let us all fall. He was at this time at Lo-debnr, which signifies no pasture, and that is where all sinners are. His name also signified the

condition of every sinner. David to where he was and brought him his presence, and Mepbiboshetb fc his face and did reverence. Sc sinner when brought face to face the Saviour (that is by faith) feels saying, ns Peter did when overwhelm ed with loving kindness, “I am a sin ful man, O Lord" (Lake v, 8). Dnvid’fe restoring to him all that he had for felted because of Saul reminds us that all we lost in Adam and more is given back to us in Christ and all in grace
for His name’s sake.
How beautiful to see Mepbiboshetb dwelling in Jerusalem and eating corv tinually at the king’s table, even though he continued lame on botli his feet (ix, 13). Every saved siniur is privileged to dwell by faith in Jerusalem, City of Peace, and to feast upon the good things provided by the king, but while we stay in these mortal bodies we will never get over our lameness. but will have to say to the end. “1 know that in me—that is. In my flesh—dwelleth no good thing" ([[lorn, vil, 18). Some believers seem to take pleasure in talking of their lameness, their love is cold, their faith is weak, they are this and that and very- misera ble sinners. Better far to keep their lameness out of sight and enjoy and
ihlk of the king’s bounty.
