THH|INTERNATIONAL SERIES. W . ! — Text of the Lesson, Josh, vi, 8-11, 14-20-—Memory Verse, 20—Golden Text, Mark ix, 23—Commentary by Rev. D. M. Stearns. The story of the Lord's 1 doings on behalf of Israel reached the ears of mauy people and melted their hearts and took away their pride (Josh, v, 1). Man’s doings do not work that way, but rather tend to self exaltation. It is therefore easy to tell whether a work is of the Lord or of men. Israel shall yet praise the Lord, proclaim TIis name, declare His doings among the people (Isa. xil. 4). But all believers should be doing it now. praising His works, declaring His mighty acts (Ps. cxlv, 4). Since He is ever'waiting to work In us and through us. why not humbly yieid and let Him. that He may be glorified? Chapter v, 2-9, tells of the rite of circumcision, which had not been performed since they left Egypt. Circumcision is suggestive of a work in the believer, for it was given to Abraham as a seal of the righteousness which he had, yet being uncircumcised (Rom. iv. 11). It signified even to Israel a work in the heart, the renouncing of the flesh and true humility before God (Lev. xxvi. 41). Chapter v. 10. tells of the keeping of the third passover. for we do not read that they observed it during all their wanderings. See the other two in Ex. xii. 6; Num. lx, 5. and note that this also teaches man’s helplessness and the mighty hand of the Lord and points onward to the approaching deliverance of Israel from all nations (Ex. xii. 20. 27; Jer. xxiii. 5-8: Luke xxii. 15, 16). The manna, the food from heaven, continued all through the forty years, notwithstanding their murmtmngs and rebellings, until at Gilgal they ate of the old corn of the land (verses 11. 12). In chapter v. 13-15. we have a test for Joshua. He bad just been appointed as the new leader in the place of Moses and had been honored as such at the Jordan. lias he become proud and self sufficient, or is he still meek and submissive? Near Jericho he saw a man with a drawn sword who an’nouneed that he was the captain of the host of the Lord. Will Joshua stand on his dignity as the new leader or accept this other? See and bear him He fell on his face and did worship and said. “What saith my Lord unto his servant?" He won and was safe as a .leader and loosed his shoe from off his foot, as he was told to do. thus acknowledging another as proprietor

on this earth and that He is only waiting until the church. Ilis body, shall be gathered from all nations, that lie may receive her to Himself ere lie shall return in glory; that these truths will lead people to give gladly to missions without personal solicitation, even to the extent of giving $2 or more to missions for every dollar spent at home. I know that such things seem to many religious people as wild vagaries, and yet I have personally proved the blessing of the Lord in these matters or in most of them for over twenty years. The ark of the covenant which was so prominent at the crossing of the Jordan is mentioned ten times in versus 4-13. of our lesson chapter, reminding us of the words of our Lord in John xv. 5, “Without Me ye can do nothing.” The trumpets of rams’ horns tell of atonement by the precious blood of the substitute (Gen. xxii. 13). so both the ark and the trumpets and the priests, all speak of Him who alone can divide the sea or the river or throw 3own a Jericho and who says to all who are walling to wmlk with Him. ”1 am with you.” “I will work and who shall hinder it?” (Isa. xii. 10: xliii, 13.) In verse 2 of our lesson the Lord said unto Joshua, “See, I have given into thine hand Jericho.” and yet to possess it he had to be obedient and do just as he was told. All things are ours in Christ, but we possess our possessions only by believing. Thirteen times they marched around the city with no sound but the trumpets until the last round, when at the word from Joshua the people shouted With a great shout, the walls fell flat, and all living creatures were destroyed except those who had gathered in the house of Rahab (verses 10, 20, 21, 23, 25).

SERMONS ^J^JtaSAMDnW.Ppiimlltt THE BIBLE S BIGGEST PROMISE. Text. "All things are yours.”—I Cor. ill. More causes are ruined from within tiian without. Many a worthy enterprise fails through the pettiness of its supporters. Many a decisive battle lias been lost through the jealousies of its officers. Christianity, the religion ol love, lias suffered many a defeat through the hitter partisanship and sectarian animosity of those who ought to be one. The little church at Corinth was torn with contention. Some had espoused Christianity under I aul. some under Apollos, others under I eter, and each was boasting not of Christ, but of his individual Jehder. 1‘aul tries to correct not by reviewing the relative clairps of each, but by giving them a larger view of themselves and of their Christ. “You do not belong to partisan schools, opinions, teachers and leaders; they belong to you. And all other things are vours of the world, life, death, things‘present. things to come—all are yours, and ye are Christ's, and Christ is God’s. 1 have planted, sowed the first seed in Corinth. Apollos Watered, came after me and cultivated. He that planteth and he that watereth are one. God alone gave the increase.'’ Paul, with all his logic and learning; Apollos, with his sweet persuasive power, and Peter or Cephas, with great endurance and holy fervor, are naught without God.
- All Are One.
Many a little community like Corinth must surely cause the crucified one fresh grief. “I am of Paul, the logical preacher. I am a Presbyterian.” “1 am of Apollos. the eloquent. I am a Methodist.” "I am of Cephas, authority. apostolic succession. I am an Episcopalian. Yes. you surely are. But u ho aie those but ministers, servants of Jesus Christ? These earth bound distinctions do not stand before heaven. Possibly the message of the twenty-eighth century to the world will be the elimination of denominational differences. Christian Endeavor has done much; interchurch federation may do more. Our intellectual creeds must yield before the great heart of humanity. Not many are drawn Christward through their heads, but through their hearts. That is why music and singing frequently reach where sermons do not. Time tears off the tags we put on men. Luther is no longer Lutheran, or Wesley Wesleyan. Nor does it matter if “Nearer. My God. to Thee” was written by a Unitarian; "Lead. Kindly Light.” by a Catholic;’ “Rock of Ages” by an Episcopalian, or “Jesus Lover of My Sou].” by a Methodist. i hey all belong to us by a right of inheritance, ancestral relationship, a kind of blood affinity, kindred link and tie. The world’s ministry, brave, noble, conscientious, self sacrificing, belongs to humanity and. in times of crises, tire, flood, panic, famine, pestilence. have proved themselves so. “Thfl World Is Mine.” That early church was poor. Many were slaves; had scarcely anything; not even their bodies were their own. Paul had nothing, nor had his cofraters. Early Christianity was com monistic, the only kind of communism that seems to work. “The world is yours.” said Paul. We have belted the equator, put flags on the poles, mapped the waters of the globe, chained the lightnings. harnessed the winds. Whether we came out of the earth by special process of creation or by slow evolution, we are its products and all that it is is reflected in us. And it is divided in almost equal shares. The difference between riel) and poor is not so great. We count a man rich who can show title deed to more red earth than his feet can occupy. We may eat thief 1 meals a day. wear one suit of clothes at a time, have one shelter over our heads. Who can do more? We may stand out under evening sky and gaze on the bright worlds in their march across the heavens. We may walk the fields and breathe the air heavy laden with perfume. The landscape smiles on us. and the brook sings its Te Deum. The Two Worlds. The treasures of our five senses are ours. Pictures, books, scenery, music, belong to us. Life itself belongs to us' as it does not to the worldly. “I am come that they might have life.” says Christ. Not a flash of earthly splendor. but a foregleam of immortality. This higher inner life makes death a blessing. Death is ours. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” “To live is Christ, to die is gain." We do not grasp all possibly, nor does the seed understand the glory of the flower nor the winter the magnificence of the spring day. Only that which is spiritual is mine permanently. My books have dead men’s names in them, and another’s will be there after I am gone. Other men have stood in the pulpit I call mine, and others will aiterward. That only is mine which death cannot tear from me. Say, you of furrowed brow and restless heart, let others look at this world through a microscope, magnifying that which is small, and at the world which is to come through fhe wrong end of a telescope. which makes small all that which is great. Do you view that which now is and that Which is to come as belonging to God and you bis spiritual heir? That which owns us we own. “My country, tis of thee.” “My Jesus. I love thee.” So Christ is ours through mutual ownership.
