Washington News Letter Mrs. Celia M. Stewart of Indianapolis, Ind.. wife of the advertising manager of the Indianapolis Freeman, spent the summer at Washington as the guest of Mr. and M rs. Freeman H. M. Murry of Alexandria, Va She made a host of friends during her all-too-brief stay, and no visitor from the Middle West has been shown a larger degree of social attention than that bestowed upon this handsome acd accomplished young matron from the Hoosier capital. Receptions, dinners, luncheons, card parties, drives and river excursions were given in hei honor, and Washington and the historic city of Alexandria vied in worshipping at her shrine^ After seeing al| the sights in and about the nation’s capital, Mrs. Stewart went to Philadelphia to witness the ceremonies of Founders’ Day^ and left later for her home in Indianapolis. She spent several very pleasant days in Baltimore, attending the convention of the National Negro Business League. Wait for the K. of F. Carnival Everybody is waiting for the grand in door carnival and country fair, the first ever held by the colored people of Indianapolis. The directors of the K. of P. Castle Hall Association are sparing no expense ,or trouble in making this carnival a big success. Tomlison Hall has been engaged for three nights, Nov. 9, 10 and nth, and a popular admission of only 10 cents will be charged at the door. Among the many attractions to be seen will be the Mexican village, plantation show Templers’ Sunbeams of comedy and a slide for life from the top balancy to the stage, the county store, fish pond, picture shows and fortune telling booths, will draw large crowd. Persons desiring refreshment booths will call at the Recorder office at once.

He states that he has been in business 20 years and he attributes his success to thrift, push, honest dealing and giving each customer his money’s worth and that he runs his business on strictly business principles. He also states that his stock, which consists of ladies and gents’ furnishings invoiced in January, 1908, $10,000.00 and the amount of sales in 1907 was $24004.44. He has 10 power machines run by electricity in his factory, he also purchased October 10, 1908, a new button-hole machine at a cost of $140. These machines are operated by girls of his own race, and they make first class operators, and he now employs nineteen people, and the most of his employes has been with him from three to ten years. He further states that he paid to employes in 1907, $4022.00, and that his rent is $780 per year He states that his trade is 60 per cent white and hat he could give more employment to our boys and girls if he had more patronage from his own race. His business is good and he is expecting in the near future to enlarge it so as to carry more stock. He extends a special invitation to the public to attend his 20th anniversay sale October 30 and 31, 1908.
