CLEVELAND’S TRIBUTE TO TAFT. Probably no higher tribute has been paid to the Republican candidate for president than that of Grover Cleveland in an article written a short time before his death. In part he said: “There Is a fear on my part of being misunderstood in what I am about to say, but surely the fair-minded man must realize when he considers my attitude toward my own party, all now a matter of Immutable record, that it is prompted by a sense of simple fairness. Personally and officially I have had the opportunity of knowing many things concerning Mr. Taft that were not a matter of general knowledge, and his large share in the conduct of our national affairs in very recent years. His excellence as a federal judge in Cincinnati is something not to be underestimated or overemphasized, for should he come to the presidential chair the qualities which made him a judge of high ability, which I know him to have been, will he the most needful to him as president of the United States. His high ideals of honesty and of relative justice, his great capacity for severe labor, and his humorous wisdom in the face of the serious problems are attributes equally valuable and commendatory to a people seeking him in whom they may repose the trust of their collective interests while they turn their increased attention to their pressing individual demands."
government guarantee of bamk deposits. Two years ago It looked as though it would be government ownership, but- it was sure to be gorernment something or other. All the ideas which Bryan has championed resolve themselves Into the one idea which is the core of Socialism, that only by government shall mankind be saved from itself. Guaranteeing bank depos its is only ttte open form which it takes for the present occasion. The real danger lurks in the background of insincerity.—New York Sun (Dem.).
ANTI-TAFT NEGBO. (Continued from page 1.)
Encouraging Recklessness. (Chicago Inter Ocean.) It is a pretty and consoling spectacle when An Oklahoma bank has failed to see the state intervene and instant ly relieve the anxiety of its deposi tors. Yet it is an entirely safe, prophecy that because of this law the percen tage of bank failures will be higher in Oklahoma than elsewhere. And some day so many banks may fail, because of the encouragement thus given tc reckless banking, that the resources ol the public treasury will also fail and the state itself go into bankruptcy.

Indiana. . No. 17156.
Cora Maiie Lagson vs Arthur GarfieldLawson BE IT KNOWN, That on the 15th day of September, 19o8. the above named plaintiff by her attorneys, filed in the ofiSceof the Clerk of the Circuit court of Marion county, Sfateof Indian^, her complaint against the above uum ed defendant Arthnr Garfield Lawson andVhe said plaintig having also filed in said clerk’s officethi affidavit of a competent person.show ing that defendant, Arthnr GarfieldLawson, is not a resident of tbe State of Indiana, and said cause is for divorce and that the above named defendant is a nocessary party thereto and whereas said ptaintifi having by endorsement on said complaint required said defen. daat to appear in said conrt, and answerdemur thereto on the 16th day of November. 1908. Now therefore, by order of said court, said de
lecture platform and made him a man of great wealth, William J. Bryan was a newspaper editor and a* congress man. His work was done on the Omaha World Herald, and here is what he said at that time (1895) on the question -of pensions for the Union soldiers: "The next session of congress will have to wrestle withjme deficiency of $36,000,000. This is on account of pensions. This appropriation for pensions for the next year must not be less than $150,000,000. It is therefore easy arithmetic to perceive that the appropriations that congress must make for pensions next session must aggregate not less than $186,000,000. "This tremendous sum would In itself be enough to ruin a reasonable government. One would not complain if it were an honest debt, but a large proportion is not debt, because it was never earned by any act of patriotism or heroic service. The government is held up and despoiled of no mean portion of this, and it seems helpless to defend itself. One cannot help be ing curious to know how many years it will take to exhaust the generation which feels injured by the war. It la safe to say that never did a generation display such remarkable longevity.” How do the old veterans like that kind of a man for president?

JUST AS IT WAS IN 1896 AfjD 1900. "It Is no different Bryan who is running for president this year. As the days pass it becomes increasingly clear that the Intelligence of 'the country will have to contend in 1908 against essentially the same desperate appeals to cupidity and Ignorance and thriftlessness 'ks were made in 1896 and again in 1900. “A Bryan campaign without quackery would be welcome, but it would be inconceivable. ought to be free in expressing those opinions. Tbe Informer has no reason for thinking that any intelligent snd honest persons within or without 1 hr churches in question want to see our colored bishops abandon their right to engage properly and with dignity and fearlessness in political discussion. There is one fact, however, that all should retnember in the present agitated state of the public mind, and that is that the bishops are powerless to force the people into blindly following any groop of men, whether bishop* or not. Any movement of themenbers of the episcopal order ot thee lored Methodist churches to unite' in an attempt to force the clergy and laity or either into supporting Taft would instant y caune such a reaction asgieatly to add to the already growing senti ment of the Negro voters agai sst be m in who officially endorsed, in an an nual report, as secretary of war, Roosevelts det-picable and infamous discharge of a hundred and sixty-stven brave black veterans.

CAN BREWERS BUY INDIANA?
“Money talks,” tut can it buy an honest pian’s vote in Indiana this fall? We think not, and so we are confident that the well-laid plans of the moneyed brewers and saloon men will fail in this state this year. Their one desire is to block^all temperance legislation that the Republicans propose, and incidentally they have hone of nullify ing and making of no effect the laws now in force. To do this they have all joined the Democratic party and “chipped in” to finance it to victory. Had -the Republican party bid for brew ery boodle and assistance, it would have had it. It thinks more of the well-being and social righteousness of all the people, especially the coming citizens of the state, than it does of a temporary brewery-bought party ad
vantage.
Indiana beer sellers and beer makers are all in politics, but they are not “good party men.” They are no “slaves to party,” not they. They aim to be slave drivers of a party for their ^own trade advantage. It’s “business”with them, and this year the Democratic organization has agreed to answer their whip and do their wfll. It is not a novel experience to that party, but this year there is more unanimity among the Democratic leaders and the brewers than usual. Will the rank and file of that party answer the whip? We think not. Their patriotism and their manhood call on them to reprove their “lead ers,” who are really drivers this year, J;>y voting to elect Jim Watson as governor of the state and a Republican legislature that is pledged to furthei temperance legislation.

Simplification of court procedure and the need of providing a poor man with all the rights before the courts enjoyed by his wealthier neighbor are popular reforms that are growing in favor, even of lawyers. In his latest public address Attorney General Bingham de Clares for a law making it e&sy for a citizen of limited means to bring into court any suit he may have and be as sured that prompt judgment will be given. The law s delay has worked much injustice to the poor litigant as against his wealthy opponent. Thij our able attorney general recognizes and he promises to endeavor to bring to the people of Indiana a law that will reform present procedure in both lower and higher courts to the end that exact and equal justice in the courts may be had by all so unfortunate as to need their arbitration in matters of dispute. "Jim” Bingham stands for the poor man and his rights at all times, and in this latest speech of his he proves It again, making evident once more that his defeat on election day would be little short of a calamity to the state. In his keynote speech at Fort Wayne Jim Watson did more than plant himself with both feet on the local option plank of our platform. He proved that the Republican administration ol Indiana has been really money-saving as well as money-spending compared with its predecessors in office; thal while the cost of managing the 'state has increased naturally, there has been no needless extra^gance in se curing the present high efficiency all admit in the government of our great commonwealth. Republican stewardship of the state has been good for all

Old Vermont did well, of course, in Its good old Republican way, and its majority vote may well be taken as an Index of the way the country will vote in November. Its elections for a generation have been read as forecasting national results. Indiana’s elections might be considered also as significant of national tendencies. No Democrat ic president has ever been elected without this state’s vote. Bryan will not be elected in this year of grace with or without its vote. No loyal Republican wishes this to he a year of disgrace by giving him any minority even of Indiana’s electoral vote.
