Text of tlie l,uke II, 40-521. Memory VcrMea, 4»-5J—tiolden Text. Luke il, 52—Commentary Prepared Uy Rev. I>. H. Steam*. [Copyright, Utoa, by American Prcaa Association. T Whether we study what is ealled the Old Testament or the New Testament our aim should he to know God, for, as I>r. Murray says: “The central thought of this hook is God. Its ono object is to reveal God, His Klory, His will. His love. In reading it our chief desire ought to bo to know God. May our life and heart be as full of God as this hiwik is!” As no man hath seen God at any lime except as the only her gotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father hath doelared Him, and as no man knowoth the Father save the Son. and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal Him Uoliu I. 18; Matt, xi, 27), we can only know God in Ghrist, and must see the Son of God In all the revelations of God from Gen. 1, 1. onward. It Is well to remember these things as we begin again :i study of the life of Him who was "God manifest in the flesh” (1 Tim. iii. 1H>. Two weeks ago in our rbristnias lesson we saw the Mist: met) from the east worshiping Him with their gifts, but in the lesson today years have passed .since then and He is now at the age of twelve keeping the Passover with Hts mother and Joseph in Jerusalem. Verses 3!> and ol each speak of si return to Nazareth, hut in the former it is His first going to Nazareth after He was born of Mary; in the latter it is His return at the age of twelve to be subject to the limitations of the humble home and the carpenter's shop for eighteen years more. Verse 40 gives His history to the age of twelve, and verse 52 from twelve to thirty. All the while He was the "Salvation of God,” "the King of the Jews/-’ "tlie Lord's Christ,” "a light to lighten the gentiles and the glory of Israel” (Luke ii, 25-32; Matt,
ii, 2j.
John the Baptist was filled with the Holy Spirit from his birtli (Luke i, 15/, and surely J<»su.s was also. The Holy Spirit revealed to His humanity that which He needed to know as He was able to lienr ii. and thus He increased in wisdom. The grace of God must have been exceedingly abundant toward Him to enable Him, knowing whom He was, to sojourn meekly and submissively in Nazareth those thirty years. As to His body of flesh and blood. He grew as do others of the children whose nature.sin excepted. He took upon Him <Heb. ii, 14; iv, 15*. More than is written of those thirty years Mary will'doubtless he glad to tell us in due time if we need to know. We do certainly need to know now more of the submission to circumstances and limitations which was so fully manifest in Him. for as one has said, "Submission is the highest mission on earth’** <J;*.s. It. 7; I. Pet. v, 5; Eph. v, 21: Matt. xi. 211, 30j. As to growth see II Pet. iii, 18; I Pet. ii, 2; II Sam. v. 10, margin: EZek. xli, 7. Tlie Passover was one of the three groat annual feasts, and not oulp pointed backward to the deliverance from Egypt, but also forward to a greater deliverance from all nations of the earth, when the Passover shall be fulfilled (Ex. xxiii. 14-17; xii, 1-7; Jer. xxiii, 5-8; Luke xxii. 15. IGi. The sacrificial part was fulfilled when Christ our Passover was sacrificed for us (I Cor. v. 7*. but the full benefit is yet to be seen. We who are redeemed, being perfectly safe under the shelter of His blood shed for us. are to be found with loins girdl'd, eating tin* Lamb, not disdaining tlie bitter herbs, emblem of our fellowship with Him in His sufferings (Phil. i. 2!>; John vi. 57). We must also beware of all carelessness in our daily walk, lest by allowing ourselves to wander from Him we bring sorrow to our hearts as we again seek Him till we find Him. If we allow ourselves to go a day's journey without Him it may take mom Ilian a day's sorrowful seeking ere we again rejoice in Him. There are some seemingly strange things in this story which may well lead us to consider how much or how little they knew of . this unique Son among all the sons of men—the only one who lived elsewhere before He lived on earth, the only one who could be called truly "the seed of the woman,” the only one who never thought nor said nor did a wrong thing. It seems odd that they should start for home without being sure that He was with them; tjiat they should think He would prefer the company of kinsfolk or acquaintance to that of His own mother: that they slio|ild not go right to the temple to seek Him as soon as they returned to the city. But let us turn from them to Him and to His first recorded utterance, the one solitary recorded utterance of thirty years, which covers also His whole sojourn In a mortal body. "I must be about My Father's business’’ (verse 49). This is the first "My Father” of human lips spoken of God. although there is an approach to it in Isa. Ixiii. 1(3; Ixiv. 8: Mai. ii, 10. He ever set aside any thought of the paternity of Joseph. Another child would have thought of the wonders of the great city, visiting friends, or the journey and return, but He is wholly occupied with the things of His Father, to the great astonishment of those specially versed in the things of God. Since we find Him at this early age more interested in the house of God and the word of God and the things of God than in all else—and remember the early piety of Samuel, David. Joash and Josiah—why not expect our young people to receive and serve Him and learn to let Him live in them? Toe same Spirit who lived and wrought in Him and in these others is Yvilling to live and work in us and iu our children.
