WARNING FOR PARENTS. Dr. Morgan UrKwa Prompt Action If Diphtheria Symptom* Appear. A slight increase in the number of diphtheria cases being reported to the city board of health caused Dr. Herman G. Morgan, secretary of the board, to issue a statement today urging parents to call physicians and have throat cultures taken when their children show the slightest symptoms of the disease. One death from diphtheria has been reported to the board in the last three
days.
“The opening of school.” said Dr. Morgan, “always causes a slight increase in the number of diphtheria cases. Parents should pay particular attention to sore throat symptoms, and especially if diphtheria is in the neighborhood. They should call a physician and have a culture taken from the throat and sent to the city board of health laboratory for examination for diphtheria traces.” A Fresh Start. Hall. “The Passing Show."
The sreat annual work of the Brothers Shubert, “The Passing; Show,** usually a contributor to the success of the state fair, makes its appearance at the Murat this week, somewhat behind schedule, but still the same munificent entertainment— more than ever the same entertainI ment. There is the same multiplicity of scenes, costly costumes, numerous cast, large blonds, oriental dancer, shimmy and loud comedy. Nobody entering the theater without a program could make a mistake. It's Winter Harden from the first attack
on prohibition to the last w f iggle.
Amou* the things that serve to distinguish tha show from its predecessors. in degree at any rate, is a rather conspicuous lack of special comedy talent. A quartet out of vaudeville, the Avon Comedy Four, is charged with providing much of the rib-shaking portion of the entertainment. and the duty is not too faithfully discharged. One of this outfit is the whiskered Hebrew comedian ami several of the scenes in which he has a part make the resemblance between the Winter Garden .and the burlesque of the authentic Columbia ctreuli seem even more close than ordlnarllv. The lines certainly are no fresher or wittier, and the comedian is no funnier. They even illustrate the joke about the Irishman and the Jew who rot into a fight and fought on endlessly because they forgot the word "sufficient'* that was to end the bat-
tle. So much for the comedy.
The show, of course, is expensively and sometimes prettily staged. A rather well-done burlesque of "The Jest” is one of the important scenes. Other scenes show such well-known Winter Garden spots as Mt. Olympus, the American-Canadlan border,■
love boat
Kyra is the oriental dancer and she does it very well. The comedians, well ami not so well, include Frankie Heath. James Barton and Joe Smith, Eddie Miller. Charles Adams and Charles Dale, known to vaudeville fame a* the Avon Comedy Four, The show has been among the most successful of the Winter Garden annuals. It Is here all the w^eek. “Maid to Love" Made to Love. If your toes are wont to tingle to a Unticulating tune you can give them a holiday at English’s this week, for In the new Peck-Wenrleh musical comedy. **Mald to Love.” which began a Week at that theater Monday night, there is enough melody to enrich two or three average musical shows. From the moment the capital chorus sings “Cocktail Ho-ur," the curtain-raiser, until the last ensemble tune, there is an ever recurring burst of song, an orchestra of eighteen doing a big bit to aid in giving the audience a melodious two hours and forty minutes. There are three acts, one laid In New York, the remaining two at Palm Beach. "Maid to Love" hasn't been out of the musical workshop long. A new firm of procfeicers, Gleason A Block, brought it out. Raymond W. Peck wrote the book ami lyrics and that prince of tuneinakers, Percy Wenrich. built the music. An able oast and a snappy, youthful chorus give* "Maid to Love’ , promise of a happy life among the season’s productions. The story runlng through the piece isn’t altogether new’, but who cares for story In a musical show? It has the usual complications of wealth, love and ludicrous situations—and that's musical comedy. A likeable feature of ‘Maid to Love” Is that it is not burdened with glare and blare. The costumes worn by the chorus dearies could be worn quite fittingly in Washington street, on any summer's day. The costumes are smart, but not gaudy. Matmmm can send their debutante daughters to see “Maid to Love” and bn assured that their stock of modesty will not. be lessened. It is all clean. Jovial stuff from curtain to curtain, Vinton Freedley has the leading masculine role, that of. the spendsomc Anthony Stanton, Blonde Lillian King Is the girl in the case and she can sing delightfully. Another vocal charmer is Dolly Connolly, who has love complications w’lh Robert Woolsey a refreshing comedian. Your old friend. Tom Lewis, has the role of the obstreperous father whose only Joy in life is found in the key to somebody’s cellar. Dean Raymond is an attorney who works on the complications. Harry Redding has the part of the "villyun” and Marguerite ftlsser Is a Spanish girl whose presence creates discomfort tuhong several of the gentlemen. Elina Decker is a pleasant little party who helps square the woes of the lovers. The chorus sings and dances with delightful skill and there Is opportunity for much ensemble singing. Among the song numbers that scored hits were "Cocktan Hour,** "Th* Things I Learned in Dear Old Jersey,’* "You Can Trust Me.” "Girls AM Around Me,” “Call of Love.” "We Were Made to Love,” "Old Flames," The Hocklngchair Fleet,” “Love’s Romantic Sea,” "Love’s Little Journey," "Aladdin,” "Look Into My Eyes and "Oriental Serenade.” The latter was splendidly presented by Mr. Freedley and Miss Connolly. Petrova Back Among Old Friends. Olga Petrova, who, four years ago. left the speaking stage for a turn at the screen, is the personality dispenser on this week's bill at B. F. Keith's. Madam Petrova, in private life Mrs. John Stewart, formerly of this city, is theatrically know'll for her ability to play emotional role* and to sing delightful little melodies. On her return to the Keith stage here Monday *»he appropriately opened her program with a pleasing rendit<on of James Whitcomb Riley’s "A Life Lesson,” better known as “There Little Girl. Don’t Cry.” Hhe sang other uuaint bit* and then disclosed her ability as an actress by an excerpt from a drama laid in the English colony in South Africa. Generous applause drew Petrova to the footlights and she told of her delight at returning to old friends and the speaking stage. She wore a typical Petrova gown, a clinging creation that gives her much-discussed figure
full parade.
Lucille and her talking parrot and cockatoo open the entertaining bill. Francia Renault, a female impersonator of much ability and elaborate gowns, amuses with impersonations
of stage celebrities.

Mae Melville and George Rule present a laugh called "The League of Servants.” 1 The big comedy hand of the bill is handed young Jack Osterman, who does a snappy monologue and Imitations of other acts on the bill. l.yrie Vaadevllle. The feature of the week'* bill at the Lyric is an act based on rural comedy, in which a company headed by Peggy Houlton entertains with the usual checker championships of the "Turn Pike” community. The sketch is laid In the general store at the cross-road. "At the Turn Pike” is the title of the skit. Johnson brothers and Johnson offer more or less of a minstrel show in their vary pleasing act. Several catchy numbers are sung by the trio and some clever wit.is dispensed by the Johnson brothers, the two black-faced members. Frank Bush, who Is an old hand at story telling, has an act of I comic anecdotes and imitations. Mr. | Bush played eighteen years ago at the Park theater in Indianapolis, and has been at the story-telling game ] for forty years. ^ !
