There has not been as much loss on ordinary light kilHng steera nor light heifers and cow stuff, but they did not show as much advance as other cattle did last week. Bulls are higher than they have been and some of the local killers say the high cost has forced them out of

the market.

The top price on Friday was $11.25, paid for a 2,240-pound Shorthorn bull that made the owner $252. There were 1.47$ cajves received Thursday, i the largest run since the record was made in October, 1*13. There were 300 more calves than cattle, which is unusual. Fresh receipts of 900 calves on Friday again gave buyers the advkntage and there was a further decline # of 60 cents to $1.00 in prices with the general sales of good veals from $JC.OO down. lack of oats offerings

CHICAGO. April 23.—Urgent European demand for breadstufts attracted considerable notice today as a bullish factor in the corn market. Besides, cold, wet weather tended further to strengthen prices. Finnaclal conditions received much less attention than has been tlje rule of late. Opening quotations, which ranged from 1c decline to %c advance^ with May $1.6*61.67 and July $U58%6 1.59%. were followed by a decided general upturn and then something of a reaction. Latter, the weakness of stocks and cotton had an evident bearish effect on corn Prices closed nervous, %e to l%c net lower, with May $1.66% to $1 66. and July $1.57% to $1.57%. Oats ascended with greater swiftness than corn owing more to lack of offerings than to any great buying. After opening %c to 2%e up, including July at Sac to S6%e, the market climbed a little further before- any setback began. Provisions reflected the advance of grain. Most of the trading was in lard.

First yesther reports indicating rains at some points east of the Mississippi and continued dry weather tn the southwest led to some trade and southern buying, but the cables were lower than due ami there was renewed selling for Wall street account. The opening was steady at a decline of 5 to 27 .points and prices rallied several points right after the opening with July selling at 38.75c and October. 35.40c. The improvement waa not sustained with trices soon selling off 25 to 30 points, or •boot 20 to 35 points net lower. Private cables reported a small but comparatively steady market at Liverpool wdh burine** in Manchester held in cteck by the uncertainty of the labor outlook July sold off to 38.20c and October to 34.85e before the end of the morning or about 50 to 85 points net lower on the active position*. Demand improved below the 35c level for October contract* and there atere rallies of 15 to 20 points from the lowest. but the undertone was nervous and traders seemed to be more impressed by the talk of unsettle,! outside conditions than by bullish crop or spot advices. The New Orleans market was relatively heavy and houses with New Orleans connections were credited with sel ,! ng here on the rallies. The market w kened again during the middle of the atternoen owing to declines in New Orleans, with a renewal of local and Wall street selling and the bearish view of general financial condition*. Some months made new lows tor the movement with July selling off to 38.20c and October to 34.6»c or 65 to 75 point* net lower. , • Futures closed steady: May, 40 65c: July. 38.25c: October. 34.85c: December. 33.83c: January. 33.25c.
