^ " —April 18— •' * The arrival of 1,0*0 hogs, as many as were received In the four days preceding, and a restricted outlet for eastern shipments were factors in

price depression.

At first eastern agents in a position to take hogs, paid 617.26 for their choice of the light kinds and in the truck division stiles were uj> to 617.75, largely at 617.60. but only about onefifth of the auppiy sold that way. In the cariot division there were early bids at 616.75, but later flCingan A Co. made an offer of 616.00 for the general run of mixed and assorted hogs averaging 225 pounds down. This weakened other buyers. Negotiations came to a standstill. Late In the day Armour A O*.. and the Indianapolis Abattoir Company, with a few of the smaller buyers, took around 1,000 hogs at 6l« 6* to 6U.7S for the stock averaging leas than 260

Cattle ef Better Quality.

The Friday run of 1,«00 cattle was larger than the total for the four days Preceding, and unusually large for this time in the week, even under normal conditions. This had a tendency to slow down the trading, but there were more Buyera in the field* than at any other time In the week, and they absorbed the supply at prices that were a little lower in a general way and decidedly lower in some cases compared with the skyrocket transactions on Thursday. Since a week ago there has been a net advance of at leaat $1.00 on most of the stock used for the dressed

beef trade.

In two days more cattle have been sold around top quotations than for a long time preceding, indicating a higher standard of quality than pre-; vlously hut this is also due to a more liberal classification. Therq was finally a distinct softening trend in the trade and buyers predict decidedly lower prices unless there is a decrease la receipts. Difficulty and delay in getting permits for outbound shipments is an arugment against normal and except for a closer classif

market C was $1.<J0 to 61.00 higher except for a closer classification there was little change In closing prices compared with the opening. The best pries was 6*0.00 and other good voals sold at 611.00 to 616.50, a gain of 64.00 to 66.00 in a period of three days. The feeder trade continued at a minimum volume with apparently no change in prices. The host steers offered Friday were fed by Burney .Brown, on his farm sear Valley Mills, and they sold through the firms of Graves, Nave A Co., to D. A. SIDELIGHTS ON MARKETS

—April 16—

Lake navigation has opened two coal boat* passed through the «traito yesterday. No shipment* of grain expected, however, for

•everaf day*.

Reports from the grain belt indicate that •**'cding >• seriously delayed by bad weather. Grain new in the ground la rotting, some reports say. v The French cabinet decided to put further reetrictions on importations because of ex-

change rates.

Thomson 3 McKinnon’s Market Letter. —April 16— Com—The action of com prices today was mainly in the way of a natural reaction from the recent steady advance. At

of

producer - maintains his hold of product* by mean* of funds borrowed from the country bank It la believed that loans of thi* nature are rather over extended. and it Is argued that any stringency in tbe general financial situation would neces-

iton irom roe recent steaoy advance.

P that this thought j*. worth considering. although we admit that the immediate cash position has not been weakened. Onto—An over-bought position was uncovered in o&ta daring the day. Sates induced by reports of further cancellations by Frapc* and offerings for shipment from England at less than domestic ^prices. Of course, offerings of oats from Engiaisd do not relieve the immediate stringency, but actual importation would aid materially in relieving what has promised to be an acute situation. The present situation is still a strong one but the action of prices has considerably discounted it and developments now should favor somewhat lower prices. Provisions—The strength in bog* and early action of grains precipitated rather general short covering in the grociaioh list. Country packers were moderate sellers of lard on thh advance.
