How does the bumblebee differ from tbe honeybee C Answers to Pre-vlows (fineations. 1. Why are the miRratory birds"seen first in the morning on their return to the north? The reason why the birds always appear first.in the morning, and not in the afternoon, is that in raigratinE they travel by night, and stop and feed and disport themselves by day. They come by the owl train, and are here before we are up in the morn-
ing.

On lifting up the leaf I discovered that a hairy spider was ambushed here, and had the bee by the throat. The vampire was evidently afraid of the bee's sting, and was holding it by the throat till quite sure of its death. 3. What is the color of the best maple sirup? Maple sugar in its perfection is rarely seen, perhaps never seen. In the market. When made in large quantities and indifferently. It is dark and coarse; but when made in small quantities—that is. quickly from the first run of sap and propetly treated —it has a wild delicacy of flavor that no other sweet can match. Made into sirup, it is white and clear as clover honey; and crystallised into sugar, it is as pure as the wax. [Rights reserved by Houghton Mifflin Co.J PASSENGERS REFUSE TO PAY INTERURBAN FARES

Delphi. Ind., April ll—Friends of Leonard Wood in the Ninth Indiana congressional district believe that they will roll up Cor him a handsome majority in the Republican presidential preference primary on May 4 and that the delegatee from the district

A survey, which included a visit to every county in the district and practically every important point In each county, shows the friends of Wood have good grounds for their optimism, And this in spite of the fact that a determined effort is being made to defeat Wood in the district, which is

Frank O. Lowden, Warrefl G. Harding and Hiram W. Johnson have combined to defeat Wood, not only in the state of Indiana, but particularly in the Ninth district. Try ta Force Improvement Issue bn Line—keats Were Not Provided. I Special to The Indianapolis News! KOKOMO. Ind., April 14—More than a dozen passengers refused to pay their fares on an Indiana Railway and Light Company interurban car at West MWdleton yesterdky because the car was crowded and they were unable to find seats. The conductor sidetracked the ear and called authorities from this city to eject the passengers who would not pay-.When the authorities arrived the remonstrating passengers left the car. A large number of residents of Russiaville and West Middleton depend on this car to bring them to their work in this city and many persons are forced to stand each morning. Some “ ’ ‘ ' ’ee eommisban ootn- ... ■■■VPr equipment to cage for tbe early morning and evening congestion, which has besn the cause of complaint. After weeks had elapsed and the additional equipment was not provided, an organized move- ■ ment developed among the daily passengers to force the issue. Consequently, all the passengers who were not provided with seats Tuesday morning refused to pay their fares. The interurban officials took the stand, however, that those who did not Wish to stand could wait for Another car. The cotnpany has petitioned the state commission for a stay in its order, compelling the purchase of more equipment, on the plea that it Is impossible to obtain trailers and new cars at .this time. The company promises that the conditions will be relieved as soon as possible. - — — FINAL PHONE MERGER STEP Order Authorising BeTT Organisation Expected Boon. An order authorizing the merging Into the Indiana Bell Telephone Company of the Citizens Telephone Company, of Kokomo; Indiana Union Telephone and Telegraph Company, of Fowler; ynited Telephone Company, of Bluffton. and Southenr Telephone Company of Indiana, Evansville, is expected from the public service commission soon. The order will be the Ifst of a number authorizing the organization i» Indiana of the new single company to hold and operate as one Bell properties in the state. John F. Robbins, attorney for the companies, today presented to the commission formal matters connected with the merging of the remaining four companies. Evidence In former cases provides the basis for the last merging. The Central Union Telephone Company’s holdings in Indiana and the Indianapolis Telephone Company recently were merged into the new company which is capitalized at $15,006,000. U not only will hold the capital stocks of the merging companies but will take over all physical and other assets and liabilities so that the other companies disappear completely. The four companies soon to pass into the new eqmpany go dollar for dollar of stock at par. Combination A gain* t Wood.
Proof that tfre three candidates are in a combination to defeat Wood is contained in tbe following incident: One of the most widely known political iawyeia in Indianapoli*. whose antagonism to Wood is almost a mania, said to one of the most prominent lawyers of the Ninth district: ”We intend to defeat Wood. Ot course. Lowden, Harding and Johnson would each like to win Indiana, hut they all know that can not be done. But they are keeping up the fight, and \at the national convention at Chicago, the one who makes the best showing in Indiana will get the
support of the other two.”
The lawyer to whom this information was imparted said that Lowden, Harding ana Johnson are famillar with the deal, thftt the managers of the three are working in harmony, in so far as the defeat 0$ Wood is concerned, and that they are covering ' their harmonious work with a pretended fight against each other. This lawyer says that It Is not an implied agreement, or a gentlemen’s agreement, but an out-and-out agreement that the man who makes the best showing against Wood, shall have the support trf the other two.
Wood and the ••Organisation."
It was noticeable that word ha# been sent through this district that the "organisation” ia against Wood. This 1 is particularly noticeable In Bodne county, but it does not seem to be getting anywhere. The antlWood organisation, It is pointed out, consists of three or four men in Washington and two or three men in the Statehouse at Indianapolis, and not of a true organization. The county chairmen, the precinct committeeman and the members of the committees are not taken into consideration. The "organization,” With one head in Washington, and another head in the (Statehouse at Indianapolls, will not trust the little fellows. The little fellows—the rank and file—are for Wood. The so-called politicians and gangsters are against
him.
Johnson is not attracting much attention in the Ninth district, because the class of people, who gave him his big vote in Michigan, is not to bd * ‘ ■■ mil “niti

working men in the Ninth are not aliens. The railroad men in Frankfort refused to join the strike, the clay workers in Montgomery county, though many of them are foreignborn. are real Americans, the working people, both skilled ami unskilled, in Kokomo, are home owners and home lovers, and consequently the words of Hi Johnson and Raymond Robins,
have little effect with them. Watson in Subtle Campaign.
James E. Watsop. who is a candidate for re-election to the senate from Indtsma. ia aiipping around through John Owens, his Indiana manager Jn the Ninth, district, trying to obtain -delegates to the national convention who will help him look like a presidential possibility, under certain conditions. Mr. Owens, who has headquarters at Indianapolis,'first wants to force himself and M. Richey, of Lebanon, as candidates to the convention, and second, he wants to gain control of the Republican afate committee. John' is certainly a busy
lad in consequence.
But it is a safe propoaltion that . John will not be one of the delegates j from the Ninth district to the Chicago 1 convention. He has succeeded tn stirring up a little strife in Hamilton county, where he served as postmaster at Noblesville. but it will not benefit Watson. It may serve to cut down the Wood majority in that
county a little.
