Bullish Crop Advices Step Selling and Mar-
ket Steadies.
NEW YORK April 13.—Continued nervousness over the railroad strike showed itself in the irregular opening of the cotton market today. First prices were steady at a decline of 20 to 50 points on the old crop positions, while the new crop was 10 points lower to 3 points higher with January showing the advance owing to unfavorable weather news. There was local selling on the labor troubles and the easier tone of foreign exchange, but the bullish crop advices held sellers in check and the market steadied up shortly after the call. May rallied from 41.15c to 41415c, while October sold up from 34.68c to 3492c or about unchanged to 15 points net higher on the gen-
eral list. 4
Prices weakened during the middle of the. morning under Liverpool selling, liquidation and local pressure with old crop months selling 35 points and the new crop about 12 to 26 points net lower. This carried May off to 41.00c and October to 34.59. but as soon as the volume of liquidation subsided prices steadied up again on the unfavorable weather and crop news with October advancing to 34.95 or 10 points net higher around midday. Old crop positions recovered all but

Railroads are not receiving stock for Indianapolis delivery, but an embargo placed on the truck business late on Monday was canceled at noon Tuesday and enough stock should arrive in trucks anAother vehicles to accommodate the requirements of local killers until such time as there is a freer movement from the refrigerators of the different kinds of dressed meat. Buyers indicated they would absorb all the stock that may arrive in the truck division. After standing “pat” for several days with a bid of $15 aO for rhe light hogs, Kingan & Co. followed the smaller buyers and paid $16.00 for the kind that they could have bought ati that price on Monday Armour & Co., Hilgemeir Bros, and a few others opened the market by taking approximately 900 hogs averaging less than 225 pounds at $16.00 and Ringari & Co. then cleared the supply on that basis. Slightly heavier hogs sold at $15.75 to $15.90 On the order of owners a few loads of hogs were priced a* $16.50 to $17.00 and these together with some heavv stock for which buyers bid $15.00. were left unsold. The receipts of hogs at the principal distrlbuting < centers for two days were 55.000* against 173,000 the same time last week, 248,000 a year ago and 263,000 two years ago.

At the start the demand was again confined to the female butcher stock and the low priced light steers at steady to higher prices than on Monday, and practically steady with final sales last week. Later in the day a local packer flirted with holders of several loads of steers and there was an agreement that moved most of the supply. There was considerable difference in the quality and finish of the offerings becauses steers averaging a fraction less than 1,100 pounds, sold from $11.25 to $12.50, nearly steady with the closing sales last week and probably 50c to 75c lower than the best time the early part of last week. About 100 calves were offered and sold from $15.00 down. Buyers required truck drivers to deliver the calves to the slaughtering place. There was no trading in feeding cattle. No sheep arrived.
