FIRS! PART OF MNG DIM IN INDIANA ENDS

SENATOR PLEASED WITH INTEREST SHOWN IN POLITICS.

Harding, United States senator from Ohio and candidate for the Republican nomination for President, ended the first part of his campaign in Indiana at Huntington yesterday and left from here last evening for Washington. D. C. He will return to this city next Wednesday night and complete his tour of Indiana Senator Harding Is greatly pleased with the attention Se received in this state. •Those who say that there is no interest any longer among the people ot the country In poiitics are not fslly informed of the real facts.” said the senator. Earnest Men and Women. "Everywhere I have been in the state I have been greeted with earnest men and women who are not oply deeply interested in the election of good men to local offices, but they are even more deeply engrossed in the national problems. If there is any lack of interest anywhere in this great country in politics, it is not in Indiana and I have abundant evidence that Indiana men and women are well informed on all the questions of national importance now before the people of the country. "Indiana men and women want a part in deciding the questions of national Import and are going to get information first hand to enable them to decide on party platforms and presidential candidates. In many of the places where I have spoken many bave gone to personal inconvenience to be present—not so much to hear me—as to listen to discussion of important current questions. I am gratified to find such interest and actlvitiy and I am more glad to find consistent adherence here to party government and party expression. Thssghtfsi Art He People. "There can be no real danger to the United States that can not be rrtet and Solved if th« thoughtful active people of the couatry take such interest and mctlon through political parties as they do here in Indiana. Danger comes from personal rather than party government and when the superman is elevated to precedence above party principals and aspirations 'hen there in real danger. Tf the people of the country take as much pains to get the facts bearing on national issues and express themselves with as deep sincerity within the Republican party as they do in this great state of Indiana there will be on persons.1 dictatorship, and party sponsorship will insure a continuation of national ideas that spell safety for the government of the United States ss well as for every individual in the land.”

• [Special to The Indianapolis Nrirs] RICHMOND. Ind, April 10 —Business men in Richmond caried their protest against alleged coal profiteering to Washington yesterday, when they sent a direct appeal to A. Mitchell Palmer, attorney-general. Howard A. Dill, of the Richmond water works, had previously sent a complaint against the alleged p*ofteenng to Evans Woollen, of Indianapolis. formerly state fuel admin-

istrator.

It is hoped to have an expression from Mr. Pairoer or the "White House early next week. ' The appeal points out that the offer* are regarded by i them as evidence of a conspiracy in restraint of interstate commerce, since all the offers were from companies outside of Indiana. The movement was started when Mr. Dill and R- B. Johnston, both of whom are large users of steam coal, made public offers sent to them of

Big Faar Asks Muaefe to Stand Part

of Expense in City*.

(Speoal to The Indianapolis News] ML'NCIE. Ind, April lO.-*—Improve-menta to cost between $1,560,000 and $2,000,000 will be made here by the Big Four Railway Company, if the city will contribute a reasonable part

of the expense. The proposed improvements include viaducts, city crossings, a new railroad yard and a belt line south of the city. Work will begin at once if the city approves the The company proposes to detour freight and only passenger trains will enter the main part of town over tracks elevated above the crossing, or on viaducts above crossings. The city is asked to stand part of the expense of building the viaducts. Other railway companies will be asked to aid in relieving traffic congestion here by making similar improvements. SONORA SEIZES RAILROAD.

Mexleua Stale (ompUrates Strike ea Aaserlcaa-Owaed Ltae. NOGALES. Aria, April 10.—Seixure and operation of the Southern Pacific de Mexico, an American-owned railroad. by Sonora state authorities, has developed complications of importance and the Mexican federal government at Mexico City has been appealed to by officials of the railroad company. Employes of the road struck several days ago for increased wages and shorter hours. A Nogales (Sonora) federal judge Issued an ultimatum that if the men did not return to work within seventy-two hours the federal government would selxe and operate the road. The state government forestalled this action yesterday by taking over, the road and operating it with former employes, granting them all their demands.

Randolph, president of tho railroad company, at Tucson, last night said he expected Carransa would order the road returned to its owners. The acuteness of the presidential campaign in Mexico, Sonora being the home of General Alvaro Obregon. one

of the candidates, led to chargM on the part of. political managers that federal troops would take control of the state, supplanting Governor De La Huerta. Though this was denied by Carransa, fear that trouble might result from .operation of the road by

federal troops Is believed to have been responsible for the action of thw
