Declare Truce at Party. With some of the strikers the soldiers, and particularly the officers, are establishing friendly relations. A truce was declared at one of the numerous parties that are held every niffht in Indiana Harbor. Colonel d B. Garrard, chief of staff; Major Earl McKee, Captain Greenough, Lieut. Hal Adams and Major George L. Denny were invited guests tost evening. As they entered the room they took off their belts and heavy auto-matic-revolvers. piling them in a corner. Instantly every man in the room removed the union button he was wearing, and for an hour or two all strike matters were forgotten. When the officers buckled on their weapons again, the men pinned on their union buttons. Major Denny, who is judge-advo-cate, has turned over to the civil authorities all persons arrested for minor violations of the law, and Judge Hyman Cohen, of the East Chicago court, is handing out justice in heavy doses. Major Denny appears as prosecuting attorney. Several stone-throwers were sent to jail and others, -who were accused of intimidating workers, were placed under heavy bonds to keep the peace. “The decisions of Judge Cohen,’’ said Major Denny, ‘‘are having a very good effect and are assisting us materially in keeping order.” Hope for General Strike. The only hope the leaders of the strike here have that they will win is that the country will be plunged in a general tieup. They agree that the strike in East Chicago has
