MUCH VALUABLE DATA GATH ERED ON TRANSCONTINENTAL TOUR.

every city and hamlet along the 3,000mile route from Washington, D. C„ where the tour started on July 7. the tour has been a tiresome grind and a real test of stamina. Excepting Sundays, the program for the last sixty days has been to arise at 5 a. m., clean, oil and Inspect motors and then drive until the night control station is reached. Very often the day’s Journey was not completed until f or » o'clock at night. Each Monday morning the men began

counting the hours until Sunday, when they could take a real bath and get a regular night’s sleep. Collected Valuable Data. The long trip has been a pronounced success from every standpoint, accordtog to reports from army officers In command. Unusual Interest has been aroused to the communities along the route on good roads work. At every stop official speakers accompanying pe convoy have lectured on the need of a better national highway system as a means to combat the high cost of llv51 Mo*or transport, engineer corps and artillery officers of the army have collected a wealth of data ontopographic and other military phase* which will be carefully compiled into permanent army records. The government assigned a force of signal corps photographers to take a complete moving picture chronicle of the entire trip. The convoy will arrive to San Francisco Just two days later than scheduled time. Heavy rains and storms encountered during the last few weeks caused muddy roads and slow going. BOLTS MAY BE TOO TIGHT. Long Wrench Likely to Pull Nut Up More Than Is Good. Only a practiced hand can instinctively feei that a nut has been pulled up as tightly as is good for the bolt. A clumsy wrench, particularly if the handle Is long, is almost sure to lead to rough treatment of the smaller bolts at the hands of the novice. Another thing that often misleads even those who should know better than to pull too strongly with the wrench is that the nut often has to be pulled around to a certain position to allow a eotterpin hole to be exposed above It, or If It be a castellated nut to align the slots to the nut with the hole in the bolt. Another thing that Is bad tar the bolt is when its head is forced awry, because the surface of the mstal about the hole Is not true with It. This causes an elongation of one side of the bolt at one short portion of its length.

SAYS DEMAND FOR NEW MITCHELL INCREASES

FACTORY SWAMPED WITH OR OER8—ORIVE-AWAY8 A FEATURE.

The Mitchell Auto Company, 502 North Delaware street, distributer* for the Mitchell automobile, win have a touring car and roadster on display at the state fair auto show, when the big display opens Monday. Fred Mertz, head of the Indianapolis company. In a statement this week, said that the demand for the new Victory Mitchell model was overwhelming. "With the coming of the dull summer season the factory looked forward to a

letup in business, which would permit them to catch up with the orders on hand, as they had been snowed under with the demand for the Mitchell,” said Mr. Mertz. "It appears now that they were wrong, for the arrival of the duu season has brought no abatement in the demand for the new model.” Drive-Aways Feature. Continuing, Mr. Herts said: "This certainly looks like a Mitchell year. The enthusiastic reception with which this car has been greeted has been augmented by its performance in the hands of thousands of owners throughout the country, and by many here in Indiana who are now driving it. "When the factory notified our dealers that railroad shipments would be slow and uncertain, owing to the recent troubles, they were overwhelmed with letters, telegrams and telephone messages, requesting cars for drive-aways. I was in Racine at the time.” said Mertz. “and the requests were not only from nearby points, but from as far away as Boston in the east, and Des Moines and Sioux Falls in the west.*’
