SEPTEMBER BANNER MONTH
[SpecU! to Th# Indianapolis N>-»rsJ J JEFFERSONVILLE. Ind . January 1. | —All records In the mam a#© business were broken in Jeffersonville for the yeer ]ust closed, which showed an lncerase of one-half in the number of marriage license* Issued over the year 1‘Jl*. which was a record-breaker for this city, sometimes called Indiana’s Gretna ] Green. The number issued durtnx ISIS was 3.126, compared with 2.S5J during WIT and 2.100 during 191S. December showed a falling off of fifty compared with last December, the dej cline being due, it is believed, to influ- | enxa and the signing of an armistice by j Germany in the world war. September was the big month with 3*6 licenses is-
sued.
As Clark county’s population 1* about 31.000 the number of licenses issued during, the year is equal to one in five of the population getting married during on© year, or the entire population of the county walking up to the altar within a period of five years Nearly 3,000 couples, however, were nonresidents. At least 600 soldiers were included among those married here dur-
ing th© year, the majority being stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor, Louisville, Ky. Probably two-thirds of these married Louisville girls, but a large number married girls from "back home." Some came from distant parts of the country to be married to their soldier sweethearts. A number of Jeffersonville girls were among those who found soldier sweethearts. • Approximately 2.5M> of the couples were married by Jeffersonville’s corps of six justices of the peace, who now work harmoniously together and do not fight with each other to obtain the honor and emoluments of marrying the
couples that arrive.
