EVASION OF ’ QUESTION ALLEGED AT TAX HEARING.

LARGE PROFITS ARE SHOWN

Because Wilfred Sellers, of the G. I. Sellers A Sons Company, kitchen cabinet manufacturers, of Elwood. evaded questions constantly and apparently sought to cloud the real issues in a tax case today, In which he was attempting to keep down assessed values against hjs company, Phil Zoercher, of the state tax board, finally was moved to remark that “the state of Indiana and the counties and cities therein are entitled to as mueh respect and as much fairness at the hands of taxpayers as is the federal government.”

Administration Acted.

The Socialist city administration at Elwood had brought several Elwood companies before the state tax board at the statetmuse In an effort to increase their tak valuations to a point that the city administration feels is fair. One of these companies was the Sellers concern and Sellers contended that he “didn't know” in answer to so many questions that eventually the whole membership of the tax board took a

hand in the questioning.

The company, which had not filled out its tax return properly, according to Mr. Zoercher, 'shotted "book profits" of

He could not remember figures In a valuation of the property, which haO been made in 1915, althougn hB quickly produced certain items in that valuation to bear out his own contentions that the company "was in a hard ^rey financially on March 1.”

Represents Big Amounts.

Strange N. Cragun, of the board, said that, allowing an annual earning basis of 12 per cent., the profits of the company for last year would represent a

capital stock of $425,000.

The Elwood Water Company and other Elwood concerns were to be heard In the afternoon, according to Fred AJ Sims, of the tax board. Milton L^Clawson, of Indianapolis, and R. D. BroadT>#nt, city attorney of Elwood, % repre-
