Our Rural Army. The Hoosler Limited was speeding northward past many of Indiana’s beautiful cornfields. A traveler chanced to be reading a recent editorial in The News on our country’s bumper com erbp, which set forth the importance i of this crop in defeating the enemy. By I his side sat a little girl, singing in j happy, child fashion her own composi- j tions concerning what sh$ saw out of | the window. The phrase, “Soldiers straight and tall,” caught the travel-; er’s ear and he turned from his paper i to see with his companion's eyes. AN ATLANTIC PORT. August 2*.Captain Cyrus W. Crooks, master of the American bark Christian© which was sunk by a German submarine August 7 near the Azores, was entertained as a guest on board the U-boat and over a glass of wine was told by the German commander that he "hated to sink American ships.” Captain Crooks related the incident on arrival here on board an Italian liner. Takgn Aboard U-Boat The American captain said he was bound home from London when his ship was sunk. Not being armed he surrendered to the U-boat. “We left the Christiane in two life boats,” Captain Crooks said, "and I was invited by the U-boat captain In excelient English/to bring three of my men and come aboard. We were taken into the officers’ cabin and after giving me a receipt stating my ship had been sunk, the commander ordered luncheon served, including wine. "He kept up an interesting conversation while we were eating and more than once declared he hated to sink American vessels and only did so because we were at war with his country. Stories Worry Captain. “Another thing that appeared to worry him were Stories he had heard of sinking of lifeboats by sbmarfnes. Y really can’t believe those stories,’ he said. ‘And so far as I am concerned no lifeboat will ever meet such a fate

from my ship.’

Captain of Trader Describes Attack by British Submarine. AN ATLANTIC PORT, August 2*.The destruction of a German submarine with all. hands by a British submarine in the Atlantic ocean was described here by the captain of a British steamer which was torpedoed by the enemy submersible. The trader which was attacked on a voyage from this country to a British port returned here after being repaired abroad. According to the captain of the trader. the commander of the German submersible attacked the British merchantman by firing his deck guns when the torpedo which struck her failed to send the ship to the bottom. The trader’s crew, which had taken to the open boats witnessed the arrival of the British submarine and its attack on the German U-boat, which was broken in two and sunk by a torpedo from the British undersea craft. The steamship crew then boarded the vessel, pumped her out and reached a British port.
