Hupmobile M ENTERS INTO

II LIGHT OELII/ERy FIELD ON EXHIBITION AT AUTO SHOW

From on* *nd of th« country to the other, there I* no division of opinion about th* Hupmobile. No other car of Its class enjoys the high regard In which the Hupmobile is nationally held. You have only to look about to discover that Indianapolis Is no exception to the general rule. Yet the Hupmobile could not hold preference here as It does over every other car around its price, if It were Just an ordinary good car. It must be more than that—and It Is more than that It Is the "best car of Its class in the world," with all the excellence and superior value that leadership always implies. We shall be glad to have you visit the Hupmobile exhibit at the show. And we are ready to submit the Hupmobile to any reasonable demonstration you may require to convince you—as hundreds already know—that it out-' points all other cars In its class In every element of performance. FRANKLIN SHOWS TREND TOWARD LIGHT WEIGHTS

The days when automobile shows created sensations msrely by the novelty of the horseless carriage are not so far distant an to he beyond the recollection of the crowd* attending th* big shows this roar. The years sine* th* first show at Madison Square garden. New York, have shown wonderful development, and if the and more popular shows have more than bring this dethe attention of the public promote th* further exchange of between user and manufacturer, be said to be an Institution - don* a great work. As an example, the demand for greater smoothness of operation led to the adoption of four, and later six-cylinder motors, both of which were first MMh Franklin. to secure economy has gained from Franklin pioneer work along this line. In the same way as the demand for greater comfort caused the discarding of rigid construction and eliminating much unsprung weight All manufacturers have not approached comfort, convenience, reliability and economy In the same manner. For fourteen years the Franklin has depended on direct air cooling, light weight wood frame, full elliptic springs and large tires to attain these results. While the Franklin exhibit In Indianapolis shows no startling Innovation, yet It is again typical of conditions today because it consists of a standardised P The C Franklin Motor Car Company, of 7*0 North Meridian street will have a complete ’exhibit at the auto show.

Announcement comes from Detroit that the Maxwell Motor Company. Inc., has decided to enter the held of light delivery, using for the purpose the standard Maxwell chassis, which Is furnished complete, including cowl, instrument board and electrical equipment, but lacking body, which the buyer can have designed and built locally to fit his Individual n66d£. With the car the Maxwell company furnishes a scale of dimensions which enable any body builder to fit exactly the standard arrangement for attaching this part to the frame. Ready to Drive. The work of attaching is free from any complication of wiring or piping. The chassis comes ready to drive. "The Maxwell company has found the one satisfactory solution of the light delivery problem,” declares Fred O’Brien, head of the O’Brien company, local Maxwell distributer. "Light delivery is a problem of special body equipment. While it is possible for the laundryman and the dry cleaner to use the same type of body, each cah greatly facilitate his problem by having a body built to carry the especial type of merchandise that he handles. The same holds true with the butcher, the baker, the milliner, the grocer and every other line of business which uses or should use motor-driven delivery equipment. “There are good delivery body builders in every city. To his own desigri any merchant can have built the type of body best adapted to hla needs. “We price the chassis at *90, less than our touring car. This will more than offset the cost of the, finest type of delivery body, mounted, painted and gold lettered. “More and more the light delivery car is becoming the leading factor in reducing the operating costs of merchants. Department stores all over the country are standardizing their delivery problems by reducing the number of horse-drawn vehicles and heavy trucks, and substituting light delivery cars carrying up to 750 pounds. Same Non-Stop Chassi*. “The matter of economy makes the Maxwell especially adaptable to this purpose. The electric starter which makes it unnecessary to let the.motor idle during stops, and the unusually low consumption of fuel characteristic of the car are both elements of great importance. “It should also be borne In mind that the Maxwell chassis supplied for this purpose is identical in every detail with the one that recently traveled more than 22.000 miles In California without a motor stop—a feat unique in the records of the American Automobile Association which supervised the feat.” BALES PUNCTURE PLUGGER NOW IN GREAT DEMAND

Many Well Known Local l^irma Recommended It Very Highly. The Bales Puncture Plugger, a product surpassing all articles of a similar nature and purpose. It Is said, has steadily won favor in Indianapolis, and Is today recognized by its users, some of the leading commercial houses and motor enthusiasts, as an article of true merit. Some of the large corporations In Indianapolis (using this compound are the Merchants Heat ' and Light Company, Citizens Gas Company. Indianapolis Telephone Company, Home Brewing Company, and Swift & Co. and Brown Bros. Their . reports show that it has saved them money in tire expense and repair bills. Bales Puncture Plugger Is a fibrous compound, largely composed of the same Ingredients as the tire Itself and will not Injure the tire. It is carried in the tire In a semi-liquid state, in which condition, it operates as a clogging substance when forced Into a puncture by air escaping, under pressure. As the operation Is practically Instantaneous the air which escapes Is hardly noticeable. The manufacturers of this article absolutely guarantee It to stop punctures where the hole produced Is not larger than a 20-penny nail. Tires treated with this compound contain 95 per cent, air and 5 per cent Bales Puncture Plugger. Mr. Bales, the Inventor, asserts that this treatment will gtojp slow leaks and make porous tires air The Bales Puncture Plugger Company has spacious quarters, in the Wimmer buildingT corner New York and Illinois streets. _ DePalma Busy. Ralph DePalma, the racing king, has taken up headquarters at the Central garage, Detroit, and Is completing his work on his Mercedes racing cars there. Mr. DePalma Is employed by the Packard Motor Car Company In the engineering department, and was doing his work on the Mercedes there, but owing to the Packard company being so busy rushing out cars to meet the demand, he took the work in hand at his present location, where the work is being done at odd hours and by his two assistants, including Harry Goetz.

16 years of practical motor truck building necessarily gives great education in load thrust, load strain and road shock. We make a line from 1 ton to 6 ton and HAVE NOT MADE ANY CHANGES FOR OVER A YEAR. ALL ARE ALIKE. In other words, our engineers have reached the point where they desire to make no further changes. THINK WHAT THIS MEANS.

All sizes from 1 ton to 6 ton of our trucks can be seen daily at work on the streets of Indianapolis. Names of owners given upon request for reference. Over 800 prospective buyers in this city. Personal solicitation almost impossible. Make an appointment and let us show you and explain our NON-SLIDING GEAR TRANSMISSION, that now has worldrenown.

WKy We Sell Only Tho USL Storage Battery The Triumph of the Machine Pasted Plate For years the electric starting and lighting battery question has been one of the most serious things with which we have had to contend. For if your starting and lighting battery doesn't work the $600 to $6000 you have invested in a motor car represents very little immediate value to you. As dealers we have been bothered so much by the general worthlessness of inferior batteries and the constant trouble they cause, that we determined some time ago to look into the storage battery business very seriously. A Message to Every Motor Car Owner

IfM 4

^ TT "VE knew that in countless instances a perfectly good motor had been roundly abused for no other reason V Y than that the battery wasn’t doing its work properly and the owner didn’t know it. We knew that thousands of lamps had gone bad simply because the battery wasn’t right. We had heard generators called “no good” and spark plugs anathematized because the battery wouldn’t do its work. We had seen efficient starters condemned on account of poor

battery service.

From long and exasperating, experience we had learned of a host of other troubles—mean, elusive troubles—that were due wholly to inferior battery construction. We Started to Find a Good Battery So we determined to “see for ourselves.” We determined to go right to the bottom of the battery business. And we found out a lot—a whole loti After a long and painstaking search we found the battery we wanted—the new-type USL. We found a battery better than we had supposed existed. It was brought forcibly to us that it is the inside of the battery that counts. 1 Any battery maker can give you doweled and dovetailed boxes, lead coated terminals, etc. These are mere outside mech-

anical details.

But down in the box, where you can’t see, in the plates and separators and grids, is where you must have real construction and superior materials if you are to get maximum

power and continued efficiency.

Here is where USL leads the world. Its marvelous exclusive machine pasted plates, its specially prepared

sept ant'

ever built!

•.elusive machine pasted plates, its specially prepared parators, its non-buckling grids, give it greater efficiency id longer life than any other starting and lighting battery

The Marvelous Machine Pasted Plate We found at the USL factory the wonderful principle of machine pasting plates, which chemists have sought to apply for years, and which is now in use exclusively at the USL plant. A brief explanation may be interesting: Chief among the difficulties experienced in the use of the old types of starting and lighting batteries are the buckling of plates due to inferior materials and faulty construction, and the rapid deterioration of the plates due not only to the above causes, but to an out of date method of combining what is known as the oxide paste with the grid to form the plate. More than any other one factor this paste and its proper combination with the grid determine the life and service of a storage battery. Its action in connection with the acid solution liberates the power stored in the battery, and this power is great or little, and the life of the battery long or short, as the plate is good or bad. If the plates are not compact, solid, homogenous, they will easily wash away or break down under shock, and the life of the battery will be only one month, two months, or six months, as the case may be. The Old Method of Construction Briefly, and without going into obscure technicalities, the common method of making battery plates is to “hand-paste” them. The workman rubs the oxide paste (which “sets” very quickly) into the grid by hand, on one side, and then turns it

over and rubs in the other side. One side “sets” before the other can be rubbed in, and the result is an imperfectly wekied plate, full of flaws and weak spots, which gives a most unsatisfactory flow of current, washes away easily, is easily broken down, and is, therefore, the cause of the rapid deteriorataon yon may have noticed in your battery. , At the USL plant we found the secret of the satisfactory service and wonderfully long Hfe of USL batteries. Note the difference: Mechanically Pasted Plates New-type USL plates are machine pasted. The uncertain hand work has been done away with. The plates are placed in an ingenious machine and the paste is quickly pressed in from both sides at once. It sets as a mass, and the result is a compact, solid plate, equal in density all the way through. This plate wears evenly, gives off a constant and steady flow of power, does not wash away, does not crumble with vibration or road shock, and therefore lasts longer than any other starting battery plate ever made. < This seemingly simple, though really wonderful principle of construction is the result of years of chemical and mechanical research. It is difficult to explain it in non-tedmical terms, but we want you to try one of these batteries. If you do you will never use any other. Rightly Built and Closely Inspected USL batteries possess many points of superiority aside from these wonderful machine pasted plates. They arc the most carefully built and closely inspected batteries made in the world. The boxes are sturdily constructed. The jars are made of a superior grade of rubber, and before installation are tested far beyond any shock or strain they will ever get in normal service. An exclusive vent and expansion chamber prevent loss of acid solution. The terminals are strong and well-made, and all metal parts, even to the handles, are lead coated to prevent corrosion. And one of the most important features of USL construction is an ingenious method of grid casting which absolutely prevents plate buckling under any normal service. Sixteen years of battery building have taught the U S Light & Heat Corporation how to build USL batteries right. And Positively Guaranteed We can give the most generous guarantee and free service inspection we have ever known with USL batteries. Every USL is guaranteed for fifteen months on a definitely specified dollars and cents adjustment basis. You get what you pay for and know each month just what your adjustment will be, should your USL battery fail. And there is no limit placed on the free inspection service. You get it at any time and at often as you may require it. 4 We want all of our old customers, and all users who read this, to try a USL battery on our recommendation. We know what they are. There are also nearly a thousand great business concerns using them who know what they are. Practically every railroad company in the United States uses USL batteries. Great telephono companies, signal concerns, vehicle manufacturers, automobile companies here and abroad, install USL batteries because of the wonderful lasting qualities of the marvelous machine pasted plates. Come in and see us before you buy a new battery. Wa will show you a revelation in starting and lighting batteries. New-type USL batteries are built to fit any gasoline at electric pleasure car or truck made.

Marvin, traffic manager of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce, has found In talking with railroad men that other Industries than the automobile business have been forced to suffer from freight car shortage. In the coal business It Is possible to obtain but 45 per cent of the freight cars wanted and ordinary box cars are being supplied in the proportion of 3 in 9. Under these circumstances Mr. Marvin believes that the January record of 18.064 cars In service in the automobile field was extraordinary, as there are but 80,000 automobile freight cars in the country.
