[Special to The Indianapolis News) LAFAYETTE, Ind., February 5,—Emmett Wood, of PitUburz, Pa., & Junior in the school of mechanical engineering at Purdue, and Edgar B. Jamison, Jr., of West Laffeyette, had a narrow escape from death laat night when an automobile In which they were riding plunged down a fifty-foot embankment on the north side of Main street levee and into the Wabash river. Wood had engaged the Jamison taxicab to bring him from the west side to the city. They weSe crossing the levee at a fair rate of speed when the automobile turned out for a street car bound in an opposite direction. The driver misjudged the distance, and the street car caught the back part of ths auto. The motor csr was spun around and shot down the steep embankment, carrying the men inside, with the curtains down The car disappeared beneath the surface of the water, and the two men fought desperately for life. Wood had presence of mind to take a knife from his pocket, cut a hole in the curtain, and through this they escaped. They swam to the shqre and were rescued. The car is in six feet of water with just one wheel above the surface Both suffered severely from shock, ertc were painfully bruised. E. R. Wagstaff. another Purdue student was in a taxi immediately behind the Jamison taxi, and saw the two men struggling in the water. He assisted them to reach shore. $104,342 H FOR INCBlCll®

James W. Lilly, president of Lilly * Stalnaker, is president of the club, and Is one of the most earnest workers in Mr. New s behalf. In discussing the general interest that business and professional men are taking in Mr. New’s can-

didacy, Mr. Lilly said:

"One of the main reasons why I am for Mr. New for senator is because he Is a successful business man, and this country needs more business men In politics. The trickster in politics must go. and it is high time for the business then to see that he Is put out of the way. Besides being capable, Mr New is absolutely honest, and I apeak after a life-

long acquaintance with him.

'•Mr. New has a a comprehensive understanding of the affairs of this country, having been associated In a large way with politics ail his life He is conservative and careful, but with It all he is Prepressive. He is a safe man to tie to, and

“Mr. New's position that this country take a stand for conservative preparedness Is sane and wise. We should hav# a navy commensurate with our long coast line. The events of the European war have shown us the necessity of a navy second to nope. If ws have a capable navy and if we use sound business judgment thie nation can carry the commerce

of the world. „ .
