THE ANNUAL CELEBRATION TO-MORROW AT THE GERMAN PROTESTANT ORPHAN ASYLUM
OPERATORS EXPECT ANOTHER ADVANCE IN PRICES.
? INDIANA WELLS COMPLETED
£jjp*cisl to The Indian*polhf New*.] MARION, Ind., September 12.—Rajardtwm of the fact that work In the oil field* a •lacking up to aome extent, the last week shows fL Urge amount of activity. The first week of a month is usually slack, w the drill is pushed with more vigor nearer the close of each month. In the Trenton limestone fields of< Indiana and Ohio the last week there were 2*S well* drilled in. of which 27 failed to produce oil, the others having an initial daily output of ",#51 barrels, or an average per well
Of close to K barrels.
Older Weils Decreasing.
The older producing well* are gradually decreasing and the newer ones are not large enough to Increase the dally output to any great extent. There is a great demand for the high-grade crude product, and indications are for better prioee. The price depends on the way the purchasing end of the business feels like putting It, but as they need more oil, titer will naturally increase the price to stimulate operations. The Kansas and Indian Territory fields may change things, but at the present time there Is nothing alarming. The Standard is making preparations as fast a* It can to handle the product of that territory. They have the pipeline of a six-inch capacity completed to the Independence field, and numerous mammoth Iron tanks ere being built to hold the product, whik the capacity of the Neodesha refinery Is being more than
doubled.
The Standard la Buay,
All this time the big company i* skirmishing around Indiana ami Ohio producers, purchasing all the good settled production It can get at u/fair figure. It I* reported that a big company in New York, combined with heavy foreign caplin), will soon make inroads In the Trenton limestone fields, by purchasing all producing properties that can be had, after which they will build the latest process for refining, and embark In the Industry on an enormous s<*le. One $20,000,000 company has already been formed, and this will be gradually Increased In capitalization as the money is reouired. These people think better of the Trenton limestone fields than of any other, al

At first the temperance people were successful In their work and for a while it looked as If Berne was destined to be a “dry town," but after the saloons had been closed, a club known as tho "Dry Town of Berne Club," was organized, with a membership of over one hundred. Each member of the club had a key to the clubrooms and no one who was not a mem-

These cluba did not
saloonisls, as they could do nothing against them, but the leaders, not at all disheartened, kept up their work against the men who endeavored to obtain a liquor license from the County Commis-
ply frauds. Mayor William C. Maybury said of Dr. Scheble’s connection with the firm of Maybury & Ellis, letter-box manu-
facturers:
“Our business relations with Mr. Scheble ceased two years ago when he wae given the contract for furnishing the Government with mail boxes of his ow-n design. Before that time Mr. Scheble was Interested with us. and for a period of one year, beginning six years ago, we manufactured a box wnich he originated. and which was accepted by th# Government. Finally, the Poatoffice Department went back to the boxes which were formerly In use and two years ago, when Mr Schebe! secured the contract, our relations with him terminated. “There was nothing underhanded In our deal with the Government In th# matter of mall boxes, and the fact that Mr. Scheble was once associated with us has nothing to do with his present position neither are there any ground* on which the Postofflee Department could connect us with the matter. “

Three weeks ego another man decided to make an application for a license and Roher got up a remonstrance. When the County Commissioners met for their September session in this city last Monday Roher was at the door of the commissioners’ room with the remonstrance, prepared to fight the granting of the license On Monday the man did not appear, Tuesday morning Roher was still at his post, and all day he waited for the applicant to present himself, but again the man did not come. Wednesday morning Roher was still at the door. In his Wednesday morning'a,mail he received another warning letter telling him that if he did not "quit his work" he would be blown up. Roher did not quit. Thursday morning at 1 o’clock his home was Mown up with dynamite. Thursday morning at 9 o'clock Roher was at the commissioners room again, and so was the man who was going to ask for a license. Roher met him. and after a short talk the would-be applicant left the courthouse without even so much as trying to get his license.
