One of the most remarkable showings tn the returns of the vote to the Secretary of State is that of the Republican candidate for Congress In the First district, James Hemenway. Probably the most significant gains were those of the Socialist Labor and Socialist paftlea. Two years ago the Socialist I.abor vote for Governor was S44. This year It was 1.731, almost three times great. The Social Democrat vote of two years ago for Governor was 2,240. The party with the same principles was the ballot* this year under the name of Socialist, and this party received 7,134 vgjes. Tills Is the largest gain shown by any party tHs year. The Union Reform party, which was on the ticket In 1900, received 227 votes. The party did not appear on this year's ballots. It will be seen by reference to the table of the vote for Secretary of State that the Socialists were strong this year In Allen, Bartholomew. Clay. Dearborn, Elkhart, Grant, Greene, Lake, Madison, Huntington, Marion. St. Joseph. Vanderburg, Vigo and Way no counties. These are counties In which are large cities, or In which there are Important manufacturing mining interests. The Socialist-Labor party generally polled a considerable vote In the saqie qounties as the Socialists. three counties have sent In returns to the Secretary of State. The vote In the missing counties was obtained by The New$ from correspondents. The offleial vote will be canvassed by the Secretary of, State by the end of this week so that the vote of each candidate will be

The Republican candidates for State office were apparently not scratched much as the Republican candidates for Congress. Congressman Watson carried Rush, hls home county, by 258, while Storms, for Secretary of State, carried the county by 426. Landis lost Carroll, his home county, by 16, while Storms carried it by 27. The biggest Republican plurality for Congress In any district was in the Tenth. It was 6.588. The smallest plurality was In the Twelfth, where it was 285. The Thirteenth. Brick's plurality In the Thirteenth was considerably reduced this year, as compared with two years ago. The State was redtstricted for Congress In 1901. Man Left Wife and Daughter Year* Ago and Found Them at Richmond. (Special to The Indianapolis News ] RICHMOND. Ind., November 11—There was an unusual reunion of a family here last evening, after separation of many years. J. W. Smith, a contractor of Detroit, Mich, found his daughter here whom he had not seen since she was a babe and who believed him dead years ago. Living with the daughter. united.

They were married twenty-three years ago In Dayton, O, and after the birth of their only child, now Mrs. John Pleasants, of this city, separated, the husband going to Columbus, O. Nothing was heard of him by the wife for three years when Information come to the effect that her husband, who was at that time a carpenter, had tumbled from a house and received Injuries from which he died. It developed, however, tfkat Smith had been seriously injured, but he recovered and went to Detroit. Here fortune favored him. He became a contractor and Is now well-to-do. Efforts were made by him several years ago to locate hls daughter, but she had moved with her mother from Dayton to this city, and he

could get no trace of either.

Advertisements were placed In the newspapers of various cities but without avail. Two weeks ago Smith learned from a distant relative of hls wife that

hls family lived In Richmond.

Yesterday he came here, and after much Inquiry, learned that hls daughter was here and was the wife of John H. Pleasants. Going to her home he made himself known to hls wife and daughter. Mr. Smith will remain here several days, and

LONDON. November 11.—A sensational love trugiMy ha* been enacted tn this city In full view of hundreds of people. A young woman, named Kitty Byron, age twenty-three, stabbed to death her lover. Arthur Reginald Baker, a well-known member of the Stock Exchange. Before the woman could move she was seised by several witnesses of the deed and given Into custody. The crime, which had every element of sensationalism, took place Just outside the Lombard-street postoffice. While the city was generally making merry over the lord mayor's procession, there was the usual press of business at this eyer-busy office Scores of men and boys were passing the spot every few moments. Bhortiy after 2 o clock a young woman of attractive appearance, with slight figure, dark eyebrows, black hair and handsome features went Into the postoffice and sent an express letter to the Stock Exchange. She waited a few minutes, when she was Joined by Baker, to whom the letter had been addressed. For several minutes the couple engaged In conversation near the counter. Then their voices rose and the clerks noticed that they were quarreling. Finally the man turned toward thq street with a gesture, intimating that he wished to end the Interview. He passed through the door. The woman followed, nervously handling her muff, and dealt the man a terrible blow In the back. As he half staggered and then partially turned around with one foot on the lower step, the woman withdrew the weapon and struck again, this time plunging It Into hls left breast.
