MAN’S OINTNENT

n

TELLDRIDB, Colo., March^ 1 - Ths I niimber of live# lost in the four ava* t lanches that swept down the sides of Smuxxler mountain yesterday, la now estimated st from twenty to twenty-live. Your men are known to have been Wiled, an unknown number are buried under I the mow, and many badly Injured persons are In the hospital, while several , other men who were hurt an at their I homes. It is not believed that any more ^bodies can be recovered until the snow

melts.

) The most lucid account of the first snowslide, which carried away the boarding end bunk houses and other butldlngs of tho liberty Bell mine. In Comet creek baaln, three and a half miles north of this city, and buried their occupants in the guloh under masses of snow and debris, was given by I* M. Utnsted, who is employed in paeWng ore from a crusher to the tram station. He had Just come from breakfast, and was in the stable Stalling his animals, when be heard a terrific crashing and rattling. Opening the stable door, he found the outside totally dark and the air filled with fiylng snow. Thinking it waa a terrific gust of wind, be slammed the stable door shut and waited a few seconds. He i>eered through a crack, and as it grew light again he opened the door and saw the tram .cable swinging about and buckets rolling down the hill. As the snow in the air settled he stepped out a few fe^ and looking up toward the boarding aiB bunk bouses, could see no signs of these buildings. Then, looking dowu the hill, jie saw boards and timbers sticking out of the snow and scattered about He then 'went up to the ore and tramhouse, wh^re it bad stood, and saw what he thought was a piece of overalls. Grasping it and attempting to puU it out, he found he had hold of a man’s body. Tearing away the snow and boards, he pulled out the body of Qus Kraul. The body was terribly mangled and the head crushed. He then started toward the boarding-house and met his brother Cfiarles, who told him what had happened. « ^ Snowing Three Days. F. C. Ciemmer, it is said, was sitting at his desk making out the time of the employes of the mine when the crash came, and all the books of the company recording thd names of those employed were destroyed. The exact number of men who were caught in the slide is not known, but there were probably not less than twenty in the bunk-house and the boarding-house when they were swept away. . Fortunately a large majority of the SBO miners employed in the liberty Bell mine were either in the mine or absent in town at the time of the acdSent It had been snowing for three days, and the snow and fog were so dense whea tho slide came down that it was utterly impossible for one to see ten feet ahead. The accident broke the telephone circuit and several hours elapsed before a messenger reached town with tidings of the disaster. AJl the doctors available, and many oltlsens hurried up the mountain to lend assistance In digging out the dead and Injured. Seven bodies had been recovered and five injured men brought to town when a second slide came down in the path of the first, killing two more men and injuring a number of others. This was followed by two more snowsUdes in which five lives ware sacrificed. Asthe storm still continued and the work of rescue could only be carried on under the most extreme danger to the living and as it was believed that no more of those buried under the snow could be alive, it waa decided to abandon the search for bodies until it can be prosecuted with greater safety. Doctors Injured. Drs. Alien'’ and Delaney, who want up to attend the victims of the first snowslide. were caught in the second. The former sustained severe injuries about his lower limbs and the latter escaped uninjured, Both were carried down a distance of more than fifty feet, but managed to extricate themselves. George Roher, who was killed in the fourth slide, bad been county clerk and was one of the most prominent mlnipg operators in the district. He was about forty years old. Ifiie damage to the mine property is estimated at 1^00^ , The tramway terminals are gone, with cruahers, etc., and tha entire tramway and most of the towers are down. It will be at least four months before work can be reeumed. That locality has always been oonsldered safe from slides and the building site was selected on this account. Under existing conditions, thd most severe storm in the history of the country since 1896 prevailing, it was inspiring to see the most pronunent cltlsens and mliw managers jump on horses and rush to the rescue of the unfortunates. There is no question but that there will be more inowslidea In the district within the next twenty-four hours. Big Snowsiide Near Ouray. OURAY, Colo., March L—The largest snowsiide in this region in years came down from the mountain side opposite the Governor mine, in the Bneffels district, yesterday, and filled the gulch for a thousand feet. The avalaxiche crossed the gulch and piled twenty-fivs feet of snow on the mine dump, swept away a large water tank, and swung the new boiler around ten feet. The enowahed wka also swept away. Wilson Policy Indictment Quashed. The Crimlaal Court Au auasiMd the indictment atainst WttllAm WUton for actlnr os a poUey agent, oa the ground that the indlotmeat wm not as definite m required hy law. Wlinm eas reoently fined |1S0 and ooetg on a pidicy charge In this court. The default declared on the |2S0 bond of Ben BharUe, Indicted as a policy dealer, was set astda Sfaartle's attorney explaiaed that the time for hearing the case had been changed and that he bad not bem notified, so .he had not been preeent with his client when the case

was ealled.

A tall woman, using a speaking trumpeL harried into the police station this morning and asked Desk Sergeant Crane to detail a patrolman to go with her to her home. Crana insisted on knowing what the trouble waa, and she explained that she was unable to make her husband take a bath. "He's been drinking for several days,” she said, "and Is decidedly filthy.” Crane stood apparently paralysed for a afevmenL until he oould pull himself together. “Madam," he said, "1 am sorry, but we ar« short of patrolmen, and to take one away on a special case would mean that over 8,000 pe<nple would be left without police protectioa. I would advise that you hire a special poUoeman to do the work.” The woman made Inqulrlee concerning the cost of ''specials." and left without giving her name and address. "That beats all complaints I ever had," Crane said.
