The forty-stx Aberdeen-Angus cattle that closed the combination aaie at the Union Stock Yards sold for S&499. an average of S138.»l. The average for fiftysix Shorthorns was ti&X. The average for seventy-two Hereford* was 1227.06. The 174 cattle, of the three breeds, offered at the four days' sale, brought 130,342.®, an average, of 3174.3*.. The Shorthorn and Aberdeen-Angas breeders were a little disappointed that their cattle did not reach a higher average, although it was generally conceded that those consigned were not as representative of their clasa as were the Hereford* offered. In other word*, the Hereford breeders sent a greater num-
ber of their best ones.

A HIGH DEATH RATE. State Report for January — Prevalence of Grip was Alarming. The following bulletin has been, issued by tha secretary of the State Board of Health, giving vital statistics for the State during January: « “Reports to the State Board of Health show the number of deaths during January to be 3.460. an annual rate of 16.2. the highest rata known since the board commenced receiving accurate sta($*tiea. This is SW more than occurred In January of 2306, and 330 more than died In December, the month preceding. The prevalence of infiuensa tgrip» was alarming Tbe increase of this disease in January over December i was 30 per cent. Bronchitis was also more prevalent; also pneumonia, pleuritia whooping cough, measles and puerperal fever. The deaths from tuberculosis Increased 23 per cent, over December. "The diseases which decreased in area of prevalence were rheumatism, typhoid fevfir. diarrhea. Intermittent fever, erysipelas. inflammation of bowels and <tveentery. Fame of Our City Charter, Mayor Taggart has received a letter from J. G. Pratt, of Honolulu, asking for a copy of the Indianapolis city charter. In order to adopt as much of it as is suitable for a charter now being prepared for the Hawaiian city. Mr. Pratt is a member of the charter commission, and writes that he was advised by Mayor Johnson, of Denver, an authority on municipal government, to construct the new charter on the model of that of Indianapolis.
