December liquidation has been on In force, and on the ether side the elevators have been tempted, apparently, by the 4V* carrying charge, which, however, is D*c less than those without warehouses can carry for. Northwestern reports art- good- cash demand. considering th- large receipts. Brokers’ Gossip. I By L. W. Louis’s Wire. I New York, November 27.—The stock market had the strongest opening for some time. The guiding influences were the higher prices from London, together with an excellent bank statement. The most active features at the opening were B. & O. pfd , Leather and Sugar. The former, after a very strong opening, sold off on w hat looked like heavy liquidation. Th# two latter were heavy, while Leather became a trifle weak. There ia sltU a dearth of news to account for the selling of this stock. but the genera! impression seems to be thiU the larger short Interest which existed some weeks ago has l»een driven to cover and that now the organizers of the campaign against the short Interest are trying to get out. Their efforts are meeting with little or no sueceas. The liquidation in Sugar is caused by report* that all efforts to arrive at an agreement in regard to the rates are likely to fail. As to B. & O. preferred, there are Innumerable rumors. It appears from a dispatch from Ixindon that the buying in that market is due to a story that a scheme is on foot to retire the preferred stock. gi\ Ing three shares of common for two preferred. It la stated, however, that the common stockholders are likely to oppose any such deal, as th# company Is now earning at I he nil# of ft per cent, on the common, whilst the preferred stock is u 4 per cent, straight, the preferred stockholders not sharing In any dividends on the common stock over 4 per cent., as Is done In the case of Northern Pacific preferred. Union Pacific common and preferred was again stronger, the former being thought to be bought by Harrtman Interests. After the first half-hour the appearance of considerable liquidation resulted In a set-back. '1 he decline, however, was not serious. Commission houses were buyers on the decline. In the industrials. Hoop was especially strong, and the buying was thought to be for insiders. General expectation Is that for the time being, at least, all the chances of a squeeze in money are over. Stocks.
OVERSTREETJPLEASED. Thanks the President for Appoint* ing Mr. Bynum. (Hpariai tu The Indian*iM>lis News.) Washington. D. C*» November 27.—Representative Overstreet called at the White ,House to-day. He thanked the President for apjailntlng Mr. Bynum a member of the general appraisers board. Asked about the future of the gold Democrats. Mr. Overstreet said: “The appointment of Mr. Bynum Is u proper recognition of gold Democrats. I think they will appreciate It. This Congress will enact gold standard legislation, and that will satisfy the gold Democrats. I think they will make no nominations for President next year.” Ex-Representative Josiah Patterson, of Memphis, and rx-fSenutar Phlmer, of Illinois, representative gold standard Democrats. called on the President. Both believe the gold Democrats should keep an executive committee ut work next campaign, but make no nominations. They discussed this plan with the President.

CHRISTIAN MINISTERS. Only Approved Principles Binding, Some Say. The Rev. A. L. Orcutt, pastor of the Englewood Christian church, read a paper before the Christian Ministers’ Association, In the parlors of the Hotel English. this forenoon, on “Whut Our Reform Movement Has Accomplished, and V hat Remains to Ik* Accomplished." He referred to the church of the Disctpleff, and said the church had not kept close enough to the original propaganda of Rg founders# In the discussion of the paj>er. other pastors held that the church was under no obTTgatloi:s to abide by the original principles of the church, unless the church or to-day deemed them right und binding.

l*ectatlon that the Relchabank directors may put their rate to Cl* par cent. This fear may be premature, and the Relehslunk Is not llkt ly to move so near the end of the month, unless driven to do so by demands not indicated In ascertainable op.-n market conditions. Most potent of nil driturbers of our equanimity remains the big gftild exports, ongmtatmg in war requirements. The bulk of the gold withdrawn on Friday and Saturday was sent to pay for Argentina mules and
provender, and more is going.
Apparently a little more attention is directed to your railroad securities on the part of investors, but not enough to count upon. As for speculation In them. It Is left wholly to the professional element. Our people are not even playing with t opper shares, mnd.it Is said that most Anacondas are now hold In the United Mates. Those who a short time ago did un active business In them now find tho
trade dried up.
Between Loudon and Paris a languid gamble drags along In Tintos. In the last two day* of th-> week Purls also repurchased Cape Copper shares at nearly X.1 higher than what they sold at a few months back. This Indicates & further advance In the price of the metal, and undoubtedly the consumption Is increasing here feverishlyy ut present, through War Oltloe orders alone. Manufacturers of Instruments of destruction are working at the highest pressure ever known to get orders completed. Doubtless some of this custom will find Us way to the United States, and already orders for the colt automatic gun have been given out bv our government. News of this dres not prevent the shares of the English Colt Company, Just Issued, going at a dlseoum, for the public has rndther thought nor money for anything except Kaffir*. The corporation of Glasgcw has sent Ha orders for ne w steel work for an electric p *wer rtatiot) to Pittsburg, and there might to be many other kinds of steel and Iron suppltod to us by you In tho present high-pressure condition of our metal Industries. 5

BUYING COAL LANDS. Geologist Blatchley is Beceiving Many Inquiries. Willis 8. Blatchley, State Geologist, gays there in a great and increasing demand for the purchase of coal lands In Indiana. He has received Inquiries In i regard to the purchase of such land# j from Chicago and other points, and he j has Information, he says, that com pa- j riles are buying up land under which it to supposed there Is coal, In various counties of the State. This Is due, Mr. Blatchley thinks, to the belief that natural gas will not last for many years, and to an increase In the number of manufactories In the Htnte.
