Five years previously he was with the book house of Merrill. Field# A Co., which afterward was merged Into the Bowen-Merrili Com-

pany.

"Don’t any anything about me In print. To the world at. large it doesn't make any difference whether I'm here or in Kingdom Come. I do very little business In this place anyway. 1 get out bulletins occasionally and send them all- over the United States. My stuff Is queer. You might wonder that anybody should want It. I sometimes send out a package of pamphlets, the postage on which is 2 or 3 cents, while the package U worth 54 have a good many pamphlets, of Which only twenty-five or fifty were ever printed. 1 hunt up little things, the local history of States. Any trifles about Indians, Quakers or Mormon* are good, especially If in the line of original research^ Books that are sold In bookstores are of no value to me at all. I have a great lot of Government reports, as a whole. In the original volumes, they are valueless. I separate from them parts that relate to some special matter, put them In pamphlet forms and bulletin them In my catalogue.

A man who writes a pamphlet generally undertakes a subject he knows something about. He gathers Information to fortify his statements, and In the course of time his little pamphlet becomes a valuable source of history. A book Is largely a compendium of-what other men have thought; while a pampniet is original mat-

Campaign Pamphlets. "Campaign pamphlets are good, especially the old ones. There’s always more or less demand for stuff about Tippecanoe and Tyler, too.’ Here’s one of the best of the Tippecanoe text-books, compiled by William Ogden Niles, 1840. and ’respectively dedicated to the young men of the United State*' ” The reporter here picked up a pamphlet on 'The Bursting of Pierre Margry’s LaSalle Bubble” (1?79), by John Gllmary Shea, and another entitled “The Fryeburg Webster Memorial" (18S2), containing a newly discovered Fourth of July oration, by Daniel Webster. "Those are not of any special value now.” said the bookseller, “but they will Increase In value. Somebody will want them some day," Mr. Crouse has autograph letters of Adams, Jefferson, William Henry Harrison, nearly all the Governors of Indiana and many signatures of great people, to legal and other document* Until recently he had the original monograph of Whitcomb's pamphlet, "Facts for the People In Relation to the Protective Tariff.” This was not signed by Governor Whitcomb, but all the politicians of his day knew that he wrote It, "The Other Side of Facts for the People,” being an answer to the foregoing, was written by Oliver H. Smith, and also appeared In pamphlet form. Complaint for Damages. Franx J. Janlk, In a complaint filed In the Superior Court, demands 11,000 damages from Mason J. Osgood. He alleges that the defendant dug some holes In the sidewalk In front of his house and that the plantiff stepped Into one and was thrown against a barbed wire fence, severely Injuring himself. Sons of St. George Entertainment. The annual entertainment of Mayflower Lodge. No, 324, Order Sons of St. George, was given at the Propylseum last night. A concert was given In the earlier part of the evening and was followed by a ball.
