Some time ago Mayor Taggart sugaeeted a meeting of the mayors of all cities to Indiana, for the purpose - of discussing legislation needed by the various nmnlctpalitles. At -the time he suggested that the law fixing' a closing hour for saloons might be made hot applicable to large cities till midnight. This and other subjects he thbught worthy of the attention of the mayors. The date for the meeting has now been set. It will be held to this city on January 1*. City clerks and city engineers will also probably be asked to meii, with

Warden Hert, of the southern penitentiary. at Jeffersonville, wrote a letter to Secretary Blcknell, of the State Board of Charities, saying that he felt that the prison had been unfairly criticised to the annual report of the State Board of Health, recently submitted to the Governor. He had seen a newspaper abstract of the report. Secretary Hurty, of the State Board of Health, called upon Mr. Blcknell, and explained that his report referred to conditions as they existed In April, when he made a visit to the penitentiary. He did not know what had been done since, as, th« funds ot the board did not permit him to make a second vi«it. Mr. Btcknell. who makes frequent visits to the prison, said that there had been much Improvement since April, and that, according to the warden, only one caae of typhoid fever had been In the prison for a year, and the prisoner ta that case was suffering with It when
