SLEEPING MR TAXES Warner Company Doing the Moat Bnalneaa In Indiana.
Attorney McPher«>n. of Chicago, appeared before the State Board of JT&x Commlealonera thia morning In beha® of the Pullman Sleeping Car Company. Irfiet year the Pullman company was a>ine««ed • t $180 per mile on 2,200 miles In Indiana. The total valuation returned for taxation U $833,000. Mr. McPherson thought $75 a oiHe would be a fair assessment, as this represented the actual value of the property. He stated, much to Governor Matthews’s surprise, that the roads carrying Wagner Bleepers In Indiana did 60 per cent, of the passeijger business, and the Inference •was. he said, that the Wagner company profited relatively, thus giving an advantage of 20 per cent to the Wagner company. The Pullman company's return of mileage this year Is the same as last. The Wagner Sleeping Car Company operates over 1,596 miles In Indiana, and was assessed last year at $100 a mile. Although the Supreme Court ha» decided the tax law constitutional, each year the Pullman company files with ita mlpart a protest, declaring the law to be unconstitutional. Governor Matthews told Mr. McPherson he thought H wie nearly time Ur the Pullman company to give#the adurts the benefit of a few doubts. The board will meet again to-morrow, 'Out will probably do nothing of importance until Monday, when Lew Wallace will come before It as a representative of the Long-Distance Telephone Company, ■ RUMORS OF NEW HOTEL BUILDINGS.

Louis ReRjold. of the Bates House, was asked what truth there was in the nimjr that he was about to buy the northwest corner of Pennsylvania and Maryland streets, and that he would build a big hotel thereon. “I nave not even looked at the property,” was the reply. "The owners of the Majestic building, on the opposite side of Pennsylvania street, would like a hotel on that comer, without doubt,^but I have not considered the matter seriously. Thomas Emery, of Cincinnati, was hfere a few days ago and we talked together concerning the property at Illinois street and Kentucky avenue. Mr. Emery has a great deal of money. He would like to build a hotel on that corner and give a long lease before beginning Its erection. He Is an excellent business man, but we came to nothing conclusive. There are many good hotel sites in Indianapolis, perhaps too many. 'William H. English and myself had several talks about his property on the Circle. The English Hotel was to be torn away entirely should we agree to terms, but his death ended further consideration of that project. No, I have no hotel scheme In view now, none what-

County Treasurer Schmidt has had three employed for the last week looking over the books to get the names of those iwho have taken the terms afforded by the Barrett law in paying for street and sewer Improvements. He is trying to secure the address of every one of these, resident and non-resident, in order to send them due notice of their Assessments. He asks that all persons who have recently made purchases of property that bears such assessment send In their names and postoffice address. At the last tax-paying time there were eight hundred of these that were delinquent, but the books were withheld until three hundred or more came In and paid their assessments.
