Thar* la a «oo>l deal of the acrobat nhoot his fun-making 1 , and a certain mechanical quality prevents hhm fiont wlmdn* etithc reisponaa. bwt aa the part is up eccentr<c one. the ubaeoce of personal mac-ictL-ni is.least noticeable than it would otherwise Im. "Dr. Syntax.” whj^b was eeen here la*t year. Is nut ao musdoai an opera ns •■Wang." but it la much more miadcal than ’■Panjaadrum.” while the libret’o has more lifo and variety than either of those operas. Moist of the characters In the play are pupils in the seminar/ where Dr. Syntax teaches, and the many opportunities for humorous situations have been mutat'd fully. Edna Wallace Hopper, ax the wayward pupil of the school and the favorite also with her companions, ts extremely dainty aiaa attractive. She has a merry way about her that suit* well the aqggestioa of sauchicrs In bar feature*. Of the other members of the oompany. Miss Bertha WaltzInRer doe* most toward eontrlhutins to the s. nerai eifect. She is a dever actress, and her voice I* above the average in suvjiyth, sweetaea* and expressiveness. The chortat »* large and well-trained, and Its costumes are ats pictureeque as the situations of the opera admit. The engagement of the company, which opened last night at English’* Opera House, will continue for the rest of the week.

The Park—■The Princes* of l*atclu••. , Beginning yesterday afternoon. Jessie Mae Hall, with a supporting company, presented a melo-drama entitled "The Princess of Patches." At the performance last night there were a number of empty seats. The play is one of the old style aielo-dramas, the scene laid in Kentucky. It has the two regulation villains, one well dreased. the other A hulking rogue: there Is the scheming woman, the fond old father, the usual happy-go-luckv tramp and the •'star” uoubrette. Jeasie Mae Hall, a small woman, bright and vivacious, assumes the character of a girl Of fifteen.' During the action of the play she sings a couple of songs fairly well The real "star” of the company is A. W. Hall, as "Wilted Waggles," the tramp. He 1», in fact, too good for the rest of the company. In the second act *he does a dancing* and acrobatic specialty that is little short of marvelous. The rest of the company suffers by comparison with Hah. The play Is In four acts, and seemed lo ffcase the audience, which last night had plenty of room ih the theater. CrnaA Opera Hoii*e--"Monte Crlato.” James O’NetU's engagement at the Grand Opera House opened, last night with a performance of "Monte Crl»to,” a play with which he has long been identities. His dual Impersonation of EdmumD Dante* and the Count of Monte Crigto are forceful and diacrimtnatlng. Mis* Hockwell played Mercedes gracefully: Hallett Thompson, pas effective In Nortier. and Mis* Kate Fletcher played Caronte, in excellent style. The play, which Is full Of romantic and dfamitlc acenes. was much applauded. It will be repealed) tomorrow night. To-night Mr. O’Neill will appear In the title role of “Vtrginius," and to-morrow afternoon in “The Courier of lO’ons." At the Km.plre. Sheridan A Flynn's burlesque and specialty combination continues at the Empire Theater, giving two performances daily. The engagement. will close to-mor-row night. The patronage ha*f been liberal, filling the house all week, a fact largely due to the performances of the Nelson sisters, who are a great attraction for any management. ^ WBIWASSOCIATKffl ORGAIZED.
