A. APtIve. St Joseph, Mo, November 6.—Ths weather is fair and a heavy vote ts bring polled The A P. A Is taking an active part in the election in this city.

Election day dawned cold and frosty. A skim of loe formed over night on exposed pools of water, and it was evident at sunrise that it was going to be a “cold day for many of the voters After a scrimmage with the clouds the sun came out on top. and by 9 0 clock the day had emerged bright and clear from a cloudy morning Still, the weather was not of the sort that invited men to spend the day about the polUng places. A sharp November wind sends «N)ld chills through ones body Men who had'been detailed to stay at the polling places put on their heaviest wearing apparel, and then they were not comfortable At many of the voting places fires were kindled in tha streets, and around these the voters made merry waiting their turn at the booths, or lounging to hear the gossip.

The Early Vote.

Many men who work down town concluded to vote earlv, before business. When they arrived at the polls, they found that apparently every one of their neighbors had concluded to do the same way There were more voters than could be accommodated for the time After ‘•standing around * for a time, if opportunity to Vote did not develop the voters ecat(ered to return later in the day At some of the foiling places there were only a few voters, but the early vote that was offered, generally speaking. Was large It is a holiday for banks ami many concerns closed down all day. and

most of them part of the day Scratvliliitf I Bder Dine«ltles.

Inside the booth the voter found some dlttlculile* Three tickets,' State, county, and township (including congressional and legislative), were to be voted for There were thirty-nine names on the Slate ticket, eighty-one on the county and fifty-three on the township, making a total of 178 names These were dlvld^ an Repubilcans, Democrats, Prohibitionists and Populists. To the av erage 4 oter none of the tickets seemed to be wholly satisfactory SYom the length of time the voters remained In the booth It was concluded that practically everybody

was scratching

The shelves where the voter had to lay hlH tickets in order to stamp them weiw about two inches longer and one inch narrow ei than the county, the largest tit ket When the tickets lay lengthwise with the shelf the squares opposite the names of the Democratic candidates were over the edge, so when such squares were to be stamped the voter had to xhove the ticket partially up the bade

wall of the booth

»o narrow were the booths that many voters bumped their elbows on the sides while attempting to fold their ballots *0 that the initials of the poll clerks should

in the Seventy.third precinct the booth curtains deslgtted to conceal the voter, had much the appearance of pocket imndkcrchlifs not recently from the laiindrv They do not hang well and there was opportunity to see the voter as he was using ins stamp One scratcher" discovered w hen he h(«I got nbout half-way through the task of stamping the county ticket, that the booth curtain had caught on his shoulder ns he entered the booth, and* the only thing that screened the work Ol nifi han<]H \/aH his own body, which V99 inadequate us he had to st.in 1 shilf “hd work lengthwlae of the The Vote This Foreunon. early vote was polled on the North Side By 10 ?0 o clock 60 or 60 per fcnt of the vote was In the boxes in many precincts On the South Side the heivv voting ild not develop this forenoon SIlhs of the scratcher were everywheie apparent With the number of voters an i the time occupied in voting, the booths were constantly occupied in th" more populous precincts iJemocrats were making a last effort to save Bynum Ju Ige Blown and other Democrats, who art liyoked upon as conservative and Intluantlal in the partv vvtrs drafted into x( rvlce to visit and labor with disaffected Demxrits Vfia h of the opijosuion was t uud to be deep seated nnd R does not li'i ir that the laborers wtre Piiccessful, iioweve- Demociats were working hopef lily and expect to elect a part of their county ticket iiepublicans will concede nothing to the Democrats—not even Luk« W alpole H election THE HOI ill SIDE. The voting at the pretincta south of W ashlngton street was as a rule, alow until noon This was because many factories did not shut down till the noon hour and the employes did hot have a c liarice to get to the poll# As a rule, the vote at 11 o'clock was not up to whftt it was at the same hour on the day ot the city election The chailengiu^i and sheiifis say however that the full vote i« expected before the day Is over, and that the vote will be a heavot one. Another thing that attracts attention and createw suipilse is the large amount of setatching that Is supposed to be going on Of course, there la no way of telling kow a man votes but the challengers judge from the length of time the voter stays In the booth At some precincts men remained behind the curtain fifteen minutes It would not be an election, ths Fifteenth warders say. if John Higgins, better known as the "Commodore,” did not get mixed up in something Higgins was the Inspector in precinct 166. FT^ Gaul is try ing to carry the precinct for the Bepublicaaa Gaul was on hand early, but Higgins was there first The Republican clerk appointed for the place was Al Beaver, but he did not get to the polls in time, and Higgins swore in another Democrat to act ag clerk The clerks at this precinct are William Kokemiiier and Maiey Keppel, both Democrats, ^veral Republican candidates appeared during the nvornlng and demanded that one of the clerks be a Republican, as the law required, but Higgins would not listen to them, and threatened to have them arrested "If they pame foolin’ awwnd” Mm.
