SAMUEL. MERRILL TO REMOVE.

He WUi Go to Callforate-A Lecture ou Indie—Hie Career.

Samuel Merrill, ex-cohsul-general of the United State* to Calcutta, will in a short time leave for California, where he will probably locate permanently. He has *old hie interest in the book-etore of the BowenMerrill Company to hie nephew, Charjee W. Merrill, and is making other arrange- _ meuts which will enable him to spend the j remainder of his life in California if he finds the surroundings there agreeable.

P ‘

BAM OKI. MKRKILL

Mr. Merrill is one of the city’s best known citizens. He has always lived here, except when in the army, or serving the Government in India. His first public appenrnneo since his return from Calcutta will he next Tuesday nieht at the Propylaeum, when he will talk on India. The death of his (laughter abroad, just before Mr. Merrill’s departure for home, interfered with anything like a public reception at the hands of his old comrades and neighbors, and the coming lecture will partake of the nature of a greeting. MU. MERnilX’S CAREER. Samuel Merrill was born in Indianapolis in 1831—late enough in the history of the towi\ for good schools, good preaching. Sunday-schools, temperance societies and ali sucdi guards of morality; early enough lor acquaintance with birds, squirrels and other wildwood creatures, and tor playing in streets that were oul^ green lanes. His father was Treasurer of State, a native of Vermont, educated at Dartmouth, instructed in the stuciv of law in Pennsylvania by his brother, the late James Merrill, and his townsman, Thaddeus Stevens. He was captain of the military company of Indianapolis, and his epaulets and gold buttons with eagles were long the choice playthings of his children. He tilled his ofiico with care and exactness, found time to teach school and to take part in the affairs of the town, as well as to enjoy its good, if small, society, lie was fond of books; had the first copy of Scott’s novels ever brought to town. This he loved to lend. His library was probably the first collection of books in Indianapolis deserving the same. lie was q man of spotless integrity. x After his years in the Indianapolis schools the boy was sent to Vermont n year lor farm work, as wdl as for school. At seventeen he entered Wabash College and remained through the course. He went to Europe for continned study, but was soon called home by the death ot his father and compelled to take charge of the book store. In 1862, leaving a young wife and child, he entered the Seventieth Regiment as captain of Company K, and at the close of the war he was lieutenant-col-onel. His popularity as a soldier has been continuous trom the beginning of his service. His battles included Russellville, Resaca, Cnssville, New Hope Church, Lost Mountain, Kenesaw, Marietta, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Savannah ana Bentonville. He returned to his business to find his affairs about gone to pieces in the bunds of inexperienced clerks, his partner having died in the hundred days’ service. In IKK) he was appointed Consul-General to Calcutta, President Harrison having refused the resignation of the preceding inoumbeut until hi* four-years term was completed. Mr. Merrill resigned in May or June of 1893, but remained until the arrival of his successor some time in September. AT AUCTION.
