AT Tin: im.ay-iiousks. * Molodrumu At Knglleh'a - Note* Uio OtUor .Viuuitomotita. There wore wry tew empty neats in English's Opera Honao last night when 0 the curtain went up on "Paul Kauvar,** to the taapiring atrmma of the “Mersellaise” hymn. The ■cene ia laia in Parts, the time being that period of the revolution just before the execution of Robespierre. Roth in dialogue and in situation the play is strong, and if the number of thrilling events represented seems impossibly great, it is still doubtful, judging from the authentic accounts of history, if the piqtuno is ove.’drawn, or if it is in too striting Contrast to tiicae days of law and

order.

Paul Kauvar is a young republican leader, but he does not sanction the extreme weas-" ures of the fanatics. He loves a nobleman's daughter, who reciprocates his affection, and a* iharriage takes place, secretly, since the hither would not consent to what he considered a mesalliance. By seeming treachery on the part of Kauvar, the nobleman is arrested and imprisoned. Kauvar, learning at the last moment the trick which has been played upon him, disguises himself as the nobleman, and prepares to take the latter 1 * place in the death cart ami at the guillotine. On his way to the scaffold he is in turn saved by a good abbe, and gathering around him a little band of patriots, succeeds in overcoming the aristocrats. Then comes the news that Robespierre has been guillotined, and that the Reign of Terror is at an end. Kauvar is now enabled to rejoin his wiie. who, through the pride of her father and the vicissitudes of the times, has suffered even more than her husband, and the curtain falls upon a group of people reconcited to the changes that have taken place, and hopeful of the future. The greatest objection to the play is that so many of the characters, after having exclaimed “there is not a moment to ha lost,” consume three or four minutes of the precious margin of time in'taking affecting farewells of

their friends.
